Why are there so many websites for lyrics?

I had trouble Googling this question, as all the results (on the first page) were lyrics to some shitty songs.
Basically, I'm curious about the reason that so many lyrics websites exist. Most of them are shitty clones of each other.

Music is just that popular, and lyrics give a person easy access to memorize a song.

Lyrics sites are necessary because most modern musicians can't sing worth a toss. Ergo we need lyrics sites to decipher their incoherent low brow mumblings.

But seriously, it's just to help people memorise songs or look up certain parts they don't quite catch when listening to a song.
