Maybe you can download from PSN via computer.
You will need a USB cable, PSP, and a computer with "Media Go" installed. You can find Media Go at the PlayStation website.
Don't install Media Go just for PSN
(By the way, if it doesn't work the first time and is asking you to update, you can't do it)
EDIT: I forgot but there is also PSNLover but with the new encryption on PSN games, you can't play them
If you have a PS3, you can download it to there, given you have access to the PSN Store on that, then transfer the media to the PSP using a USB cable. This is how I have been doing it since chickHEN has come to existence (Own a PSP-3000). If you don't have a PS3, you are kind of SOL at this point, find a friend with a PS3 maybe?
Edit: I haven't transfered stuff from PS3 to PSP since the latest PS3 Firmware, so I don't know if there is now a check for the PSP firmware now, but I know there wasn't before that.
Prowler is sort of right and sort of wrong.
Installed Media Go, turned on version.txt on my 5.03 Prom-3 Slim, connected, it asked for an update, I updated...and nothing happened to my PSP, except I could now download things from PSStore.
