Most of the time, speed depends of the number and the quality of the sources. But some parameters can be changed to opimize speed. Easiest thing to do is to use Vuze (former Azureus) and run the configuration wizard. If you want to use another client, you can look on this page to configure it :

As if uTorrent didn't have it's own auto-config option.
Options -> Set-up Guide -> Run Test

Then try the "Open Office" test. If that doesn't work, after following all the directions on the page, then your internet is just lame and they're throttling P2P traffic.

Also, increasing the amount of peers (like they tell you in those stupid Youtube guides) and DL-limit can potentially overload your router and cause the DL speed to drop completely.

I was downloading a game. 7 Gigs. I put my bandwidth high and my dwnl spd high but i put a limit of 3kb/s on my upload speed. I kept on getting downloaded speeds up to 14 kb/s. Then i changed the upload speed to 25kb/s and then i got dowload speeds up to 200+ kb/s

The problem is mostly that you are getting your torrents from some crappy public tracker on which most people don't keep uploading stuff after their download is finished which then results in a low download speed for everybody else.
People tend to stop uploading when they are done if they don't have to keep some kind of upload/download ratio.

always be connected via Ethernet, use utorrent, run the set up it configures the firewall for you.
the quicker the upload speed you make available the faster your download speed will be......you've got to share as well as download.
I've a 20mb connection and with utorrent i can download at 2000kb/s. but with other torrent programs im limited to 500-700ish.
utorrent ftw

The problem is likely that your new to bit torrent and dont understand the whole seeder/leecher thing. 1 guy uploading, 500+ guys downloading = 0.2Kbps untill leechers are able to seed their peices to you, etc. Look into it. :D

You should search for alternative methods of downloading that can be faster and more reliable.

The method I use, is go to google, type in this for the search bar "site:******.com *GAME NAME*" (works with really anything.), and google will search that site specifically for the game you typed in, good sites (These are legal, no rom links stupidity.) include: Megaupload.com, Mediafire.com, Rapidshare.com and those lot.

To help ease the pain of multi-part downloads, use a free program called jDownloader, for some sites such as Megaupload, it will even do the captcha code for you, and uncompress files as well. If you're looking for a multi-file compressed game, sometimes you might just ditch the "site:" part, and just do a search to find a site that may have posted download links, copy them and have jdownloader do the rest.

I used to use torrents, but after putting up with the nonesense of 1-100kbps, I eventually switched to this, and you are faaaaaaaaaaaaaar less likely to get in legal trouble this way. Given the fact that I have godly internet here, sometimes when using sites like mediafire and megaupload I get a download speed anywhere from 1-8 MEGABYTES per second. No joke.

@ Twilight Loz: Why don't you just admit you were getting Brawl or MPT?

Bittorrent works through a sharing method. The faster and longer you upload, the more the client tells the seeders to send packets to you. So don't tell it to upload at 1kbps or stop at and upload/download ratio of 0.00. Just turn up your upload speed, and it speeds up your download speed.

On DSL (about your speed DSL) I did the above two together and I was getting 0.2kbps if I was lucky. Turned the upload speed to unlimited. Now I'm getting 50kbps downloads and 30kbps uploads. Sharing is nice.

One of the best ways to increase torrent speed is port forwarding.

I would recommend using rs and mu links and jdownloader as opposed to using torrents. Only because it's faster and your less likely to get a nasty letter from your isp.

Hope I helped some. Best of Luck.

Seek out a site that makes you have a download/upload ratio(would give you one but that's forbidden here). I use a site like that and if your ratio falls below 0.2 you get banned or something so most leechers are banned and you'll find out you download a lot quicker with all the seeders.
