Because Microsoft undeniably fucked up with the 360 - does the phrase "red ring of death" ring any bells?
Sony had a much better console; its main flaw, as far as I understand it, was the much higher price due to Blu-Ray drives being expensive, since they were brand-new. Also backwards-compatibility causing issues.
At the start of the era, memory cards were still pretty expected/standard. No one had any idea of “cloud” saves, and the PS3 was pretty wild with its ability to transfer to a USB stick. However, the Elite revision, iirc, phased out memory cards pretty soon after the original launch
