I have never used screen protectors myself, but when I held someone's phone which had screen protector on it, it was always like it had been covered by a layer of steam, and there was a lot of color banding everywhere. Just awful. And not even talking about how fucking unresponsive the touch was compared to without the protector...

Yeah I think it has something to do with the light/colours spreading through the protector, it looks steamy as you said. It's like sharpening was turned down.

Never used screen protectors, always hated them, they distort or blur the colors no matter how good quality they are and it just makes it annoying to look at the screen... And yeah, on touchscreens especially, screen protectors are shit, especially if you are trying to do something quickly:/

@Sono Yeah, cheap screen protectors have that color banding problem.
With glass screen protectors I can't say I've had any issues though. Applied properly, it's hard to tell there's even a screen protector there, you can only tell by looking at the edges.

If you take it off you'll be able to tell the difference immediately I bet.

What you guys are describing sounds like improperly applied protectors, where people didn't clean the screen enough. Most people just wipe the screen down with a cloth and call it clean. That leaves a film of grease, and when you apply the protector over that it looks like shit, color warping, weird rainbow patterns like a fresh oil slick, and reduced sensitivity.

I clean the screen thoroughly with a special cleaning kit I bought with spray for removing things like that, and I used surgical spirit before as well. I make sure it's spotless and shine the screen through light to see anything off putting. If anything, the polished screen makes it easier to tell the difference.

If I couldn't tell when I put it on how would taking it off change anything?

Putting it on takes time. Looking at the screen with the protector on, and then immediately removing it while the screen is on will help with the visual memory. But hey, if you don't notice it without effort, you'd rather have a screen protector, the difference is small after all.

I have a shitty plastic one on my phone right now that gives that slight fuzzy rainbow effect (it's minor) which is worsened a lot by fingerprints on the surface. I would rather use a glass one, but the curved glass screen on the S7 Edge doesn't play nicely with glass screen protectors. I thought the curved screen seemed cool at first, but it's completely useless and only seems to have downsides.

Not getting another one of those kind of phones to say the least. I was really happy with the glass screen protector on my Note 3, but it was a higher priced one from a US company (normally like $30 but they were having a sale), and not one of the cheapo Chinese ones, so maybe the cheap ones have poorer quality and don't look as seamless once applied. It's all glass, so it shouldn't make any difference, but IDK.

It does depend on the quality, yes, but there's always a difference, but the amount differs yeah. I have an AMOLED screen for my phone right now and it looks bad in comparison with a good tempered glass protector. Not to mention, you're ruining that layer they apply to the screen for fingerprint/dirt resistance if you use a screen protector which wouldn't have that.

True. I have no idea if any of the tempered glass screen protectors have an oleophobic (fingerprint resistant) coating, but you have to wipe down the screen every now and then either way, so it's not a huge difference. It's not like that coating means zero fingerprints. Not sure what you meant about the AMOLED part.

Well, AMOLED screens look really good, your S7 edge for example has one. A tempered glass on an AMOLED looks worse in comparison to a regular screen with a tempered glass, but again that difference should be very small. In any case I hope I don't come off as exaggerating, these differences are minute, but if you notice it, you can't go back.
