251 pages of conflicting somewhat outdated info.. for those TLDR'ers wanting a surefire way to stay unbanned.

dont use cfw in sysnand
create a emunand
apply exosphere or incognito to said emunand (dns redirect is archaic and is proven to throttle ftp speeds)
only do cfw, pirated games, mods, cheats ect in said emunand.

boom 100% ban proof. easy as that.
change DNS redirects to DNSMITM function of atmosphere.

Archaic is a bit of a stretch since not only is the scene not only as old as 90DNS but there are plenty of tools created around the same time that still see usage to this day such as Hekate or TegraRCMSmash to name a few. But if you want to call anything archaic, Incognito fits the bill way better since there is exosphere now. Did no one learn anything from the days of Pikabrick and the dangers of messing around with PRODINFO? SciresM himself had to implement a feature in Atmosphere as a direct response to the fallout. Speaking of SciresM, he also states within exosphere.ini that it is not known to be safe and usage is not encouraged. Disagree with me all you want but surely you or me wouldn't disagree with the most knowledgeable person concerning the Switch. At the end of the day, the simplest solution is always the best and there's nothing wrong with deleting the Wi-Fi settings.

incognito and exosphere are literally the same thing except one writes to a nand and the other is file based. just 2 slightly different methods of the same end result. So hardly archaic

most people using exosphere or incognito are applying to their emunand. therefore there is no "danger of messing around with prodinfo." if someone had a crazy idea to UNBLOCK their dirty asf emunand and couldnt bc they lost prodinfo file, incognito_RCM now stores a backup also, & last resort just make a new emunand no biggie.

SciresM's note says this "This is not known to be safe, as data may be
cached elsewhere in the system. Usage is not encouraged."

Keyword "May" Not even he has proof of said cached files hidden away, and while there are a few user error incognito_RCM incidents. I haven't seen one person mess up with exosphere nor have I seen anyone banned bc of it.

The "simplest solution" is the lazy inefficient solution, why delete wifi settings, what if you want to access tinfoil store, ftp from pc/phone, use lanplay to play online. why tf would such a limiting approach be the "BEST" way?

Because its not the best. Most, if not all, shops are dead. You can transfer files via USB with nxmtp, Hekate's UMS, or even DBI. And lan-play is barely active since very few people know of it, some of those games require hacking in order to be played which further reduces the number of users, and most importantly, these people are playing online on sysMMC anyways which negates its whole purpose in the first place.

So, I am tired of living with the fear of the unknown.
To remove some of the fear uncertainty and doubt I am willing to (potentially) take one for the team.

I’m on a V1 switch w/ a clean Sysnand that I will use for Online testing.
Atmosphere 15.0.0
Hekate 5.9.0
[Stock SysNAND]
fss0=atmosphere/package3
stock=1
emummc_force_disable=1
icon=/graphics/icons/current/stock.bmp
id=sysn

My emunand has the following but never goes Online and will not be a part of this test.
Latest Sigpatches
Exosphere
dns:mitm

[Atmosphere CFW]
payload=bootloader/payloads/fusee.bin
emummcforce=1
kip1patch=nosigchk
kip1=atmosphere/kip_patches/*
logopath=/graphics/splash/atmosphere.bmp
icon=/graphics/icons/current/atmosphere.bmp
id=atmo

Here’s the background…

A while ago I updated my eMMC to 256G and restored a copy of my original Sysnand onto it.

My intent is to isolate precisely what actions get me banned so I can unshroud the mystery around eMMC upgrades.

I’m planning to continue to go Online through the experiment, both playing games and visiting the eShop and doing FW upgrades as they are released.

Scenarios I want to test while I wait for the Ban Hammer (tm) to come crashing down:
  1. go Online with my clean (but replaced hardware) eMMC - started 25 OCT 22
  2. expand my user partition to consume more of the unused space - not yet started
  3. install Android/L4T on separate partitions in the remaining space - not yet started
My assumptions are as follows:
  • My Switch will definitely log that its hardware was changed. This is a given based on reading through the telemetry payload docs. I don’t believe this will warrant a ban because this is what would happen if you took your Switch in to be repaired and it needed a new eMMC.
  • The change in size of the partition will also be noticed but I assume that since my Sysnand has nothing related to piracy, cheating or hacking on it, my Switch will be continued to be allowed to participate Online.
  • The additional Android/Ubuntu partitions might be noticed by Ninty but again since the new partitions are in no way untoward I expect to continue to be able to communicate Online.

My question to the thread is this:

Will 3 months between tests be enough time to allow any potential flagging/banning cycles?

Maybe a stupid question, but is there really any difference between a self banning or a legit one? If it were me, I'd be very paranoid about making a mistake, just get banned and never have to worry about it again.

Only in the mind. The end result is still the same, right?

No Online for you. 🤣

I think the delta is resale value and the ability to stop self banning….that’s something you can’t do if you bite the bullet and get for real banned.

In CFW i always turn on airplane mode to prevent a ban but now it has to be turned off to play mario party.
What can i do to be safe ? I have a default.txt file to block the nintendo servers.
There is always a risk when going online with CFW and/or homebrew. You must weigh the risk of being banned with playing online to see which is more important to you.

It’s been a month. Been going Online with my large emmc every day now. open the eshop, play Splatoon 2 or 3 just to make sure, look at the long list of latest shovel-ware. Still no ban.

How long do I need to wait for the ban hammer?

I kinda want to move on to the next step but want to make sure that if/when I catch a ban it’s for the latest thing I changed and not that I rushed too many changes too quickly and got banned for the very first thing I did.

Thoughts?

Just by curiosity, are you playing games online with legit copies or downloaded ones?
Besides, as far as I know, big N doesn't ban individually but goes waves. You might be listed somewhere for ban but your hour hasn't come yet. They might strike today, next month, next year. Bans don't come individually!

well online is a 20$ / year paywall just for few intendo games mario kart ? smash bros ? splatoon ?
(emulator and exclusiv dlc can be played on hacked switch)

and also the point that a v1 switch is more expensive cause you can hack it is true
but if you hack it, i think most of people wont go online
so banned or not the resale value is the same

and finally resale value tend to decrease over time since a lot of new handled pc like the odin or ayaneo and steam deck come out on the market and can emulate a switch and do more than an hacked switch
personally i really think my next device willl probably be some kind of new steam deck and not the switch 2

so why care about that ?

Legit copies of everything. The plan was to change only one thing at a time. Right now the only odd thing I have going on is a larger eMMC w/ a copy of my legit eMMC. There were folks saying that was enough to get you banned. So far so good.

I appreciate the perspective on the ban waves. It’s going to be hard to pin down a root cause with a progressive experiment such as mine. I might as well go for my end state and wait and see.

Hmmmmmm

Splatoon is my family’s vice. I’d probably have to buy a new Switch if I get banned.

More on the point of actual resale on the likes of eBay at the moment. A banned Switch sells for less. Not a whole lot but I paid a little more for an unbanned unit and even searched for it specifically. I concede that’s an anecdotal survey of one for sure.

This part I 100% agree with you. Without going too far off topic, both hand-helds and consoles are racing towards commoditization and differentiation is becoming harder to come by. I kind of think of it like tennis shoes, unless you have a loyalty to a specific brand, any pair of sneakers is going to do pretty much the same thing save for a gimmick or two. Switch is on the back side of the curve and we’re all headed towards the big ban when they turn off the lights on the services.

Appreciate your discourse!

When people say any use of CFW while online will get you hacked do they mean playing a game online with someone (eg trading pokemon or visiting someone’s island on animal crossing) or does simply having your switch connected to WiFi while emunand is running put you at risk?

I’ve had mine connected to WiFi for years but yesterday I played online for the first time since I started using atmosphere. My friend wanted some Pokémon with perfect IVs so I made a few legal ones on PKHex. Then I used the 7 day Nintendo Online trial and sent the Pokémons to him. We did it both knowing the risk. Though I’m pretty sure he’ll probably be safe.

More than anything I was just curious about what would happen. If I get banned it won’t happen today or even tomorrow. Only time will tell. But I was just thinking that if I do get banned I could still update my switch and my games through other methods. The only thing I won’t be able to do is play with my friends using that switch —which I was already not doing because I didn’t want to get banned. Kind of ironic. I do have access to a second switch that doesn’t have any CFW and that is what I use to play online anyway.

by Online people generally mean connected to the Internet w/o some sort of protection. Protection comes in the form of exosphere - masks your serial
dns:mitm - points Ninty server names at localhost using your local name resolver
incognito_RCM - changes your serial (but makes a backup)
90DNS - points Ninty server names at localhost using a 3rd party name resolver

Just having CFW typically doesn't get you banned, but having nsp/xci or cheating in an online game will certainly get you flagged.

Yes, you can still do updates even if your Switch is banned from using official Ninty servers.
Games are typically updated via "backups" and your favorite installer.
Firmware is typically updated with daybreak.nro (included w/ Atmosphere)

This is the way (or keep a 100% clean Sysnand which is essentially the same thing but using one Switch)

The only thing that could be affected is the resale value but I don’t really care about that.

I don’t plan on keeping an online subscription on this Switch after the 7 day trial ends (since I play online with my other Switch anyway) So I guess it doesn’t really matter. But I’ll report back every now and then to let you guys know how it’s going. No pirated games or anything like that on this switch. Just a few tools like JKSV and EdiZon.
