Super Mario Bros. Movie Direct - Roundup

After several years of secrecy, we'll finally get our world premiere and first look into the Super Mario Bros. movie being developed by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures.

Nintendo fans are eagerly awaiting to know how their beloved character would look like in this new iteration of the franchise, and most importantly, the curiosity to know how said characters will sound with the... peculiar casting announced back earlier this year.

What kind of surprises would the trailer have in store?
Follow us as we go through the unveiling of this new leap in Nintendo's history with their first new movie in decades.

And it begins!
  • We start off with some words by Shigeru Miyamoto about the movie as an introduction.
  • Focus changes to Chris Meledandri, the head at Illumination working with Nintendo to bring the Mario movie to life, mentioning they're about to finish the animation of the film's this week, and next comes lighting and compositing.
  • They're working with Koji Kondo for the music and audio of the film.
  • Miyamoto shifts focus to Chris Pratt, the voice of Mario, who mentions some of his memories playing Nintendo games.
  • Next up is Jack Black, who will be voicing Bowser in the film. Some quirky dialogue from him and shares his excitement to work with Nintendo and Illumination.

  • The trailer begins! We start with some fire falling form the sky, which shows Bowser's ship flying over to a Kingdom of ice, and Kamek makes an appearance introducing Bowser.
  • The kingdom seems to be populated with penguins, and Bowser makes quick work of them to find a Star.
  • We get to see Mario next, appearing in what seems to be the Mushroom Kingdom. He seems surprised to be there, and gets startled by a Toad.
  • The film's logo comes next, and then we get a quick glimpse of Luigi running away from some Dry Bones to close up the trailer.

  • Some finishing words by Miyamoto yet again, and that wraps up the movie's Direct!

I want a venn diagram of "people who think Chris Pratt sounds awful" and "people who watched the DiC Mario cartoons and/or the Bob Hoskins film back in the day" because I bet there's absolutely no overlap

Opinion time:

- Jesus the movie looks good. I mean, Illumination's previous films have looked good before, but this is definitely a step up from those.

- penguin

- It feels weird to see and hear Bowser talking full English again after 20 years, but honestly Jack Black's doing a great job with the voice.

- Mario looks good and also quite expressive. I did find his design funny at first when it first leaked, but I've gotten used to it.
He looks pretty much the best he could've looked in Illumination's style, anyway - if he looked any better they'd just be using his in-game models but realistic lol

- Mario's voice is... just fine. Although Chris Pratt probably could've done a better job and put more effort in, instead of basically just doing his standard voice.

- Toad is exactly what I expected Toad to sound like, gg Keegan-Michael.

- Luigi looks a bit funny, but like Mario I can very much get used to him quickly.

- No look at Peach? lmao

Mario looks a lot better than the leaked face pic suggested ("freeze-frame is never kind" is a commonly-uttered phrase in our house), happy with all the visuals tbh, movie looks great.
Chris Pratt not so much.

Very promising, except for Mario his face looks very chubby, Western (well, he is Italian, admittedly) and not very similar to the games. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

That guy is such a one-note actor. All his jokes are about drugs or some shit.

Anya Taylor is voicing her so it's gonna be a nice surprise.

No Seriously where did the Italian came from. Even if he's Italian blooded, nothing says he NEEDS an Italian Accent... right? He was raised in New York ("New Donk"?) afterall.

Mario looks weird. But everything else just looks amazing. This could be illuminations best looking movie imo.
