Hey! I'm looking to playthrough the Persona series, particularly 1-3 given the recent planned rerelease of 3-5. Looking up 3, FES with mods seemed the way to go but I'm aware the earlier titles were rife with poor translations, cut content and badly ported music. I just wondered if there's a recommended version/mod combo to see as much of the games as possible?

Persona 1: THE GAME AND THE MUSIC ARE SO MUCH BETTER ON PSP! A LONE PRAYER IS THE BEST BATTLE THEME (behind Last Surprise). Definitely go that route.
Persona 2: Play the PSP version of Innocent Sin. It just feels more polished. Eternal Punishment is kind of a letdown IMO but if you're gonna play it then your only way in NTSC/PAL is PS2.
Persona 3: Play FES if you want graphics, but if you're fine with a focus on dungeon-crawling gameplay, play portable.

Play Persona without mods. It's a much more pleasant experience and honestly I tend to cheat with mods and it ruins the game.

You don't think a fan translation is worth it? I heard 2 was in two parts with one JP only.

WG's information is out of date and somewhat wrong regarding Persona 2.

Your options are playing PS1 or PSP.

PS1 it's play the "old" fan translation of Innocent Sin ( https://www.romhacking.net/translations/1249/ ) then play the localized version of Eternal Punishment.

PSP it's play the localized version of Innocent Sin then play the fan port/translation of Eternal Punishment. https://github.com/sayucchin/P2-EP-PSP/

It's a matter of personal preference but the PSP version does have more QoL improvements over the PS1 version from what I remember.

Ah ok. Is there something about a dynamic music patch as well? I have a vague recollection of a YT retrospective saying the official localisations messed it up along with difficulty and other cut stuff.

I don't know anything about a dynamic music patch. I do know that PSP is your best bet for Persona 1 due to the English PS1 version being neutered and wonked around with by the atlus of then.
