Duke Nukem Forever has been dethroned by Beyond Good and Evil 2 for most delayed game of all time

When Ubisoft made the choice to delay Skull & Bones for the fifth time, a few comparisons were made to Duke Nukem Forever, a game known well for its amount of delays and lengthy development cycle. But in actuality, there was a better comparison to be made--another Ubisoft game, in fact. While it took Duke Nukem Forever 5,156 days to be announced and subsequently released, Ubisoft's Beyond Good and Evil--initially teased in 2008--is still in development, with no release in sight, 5,239 days after its official reveal. That means it now holds the Guinness World Record for the longest development period for a AA video game.

In the years since BG&E2's announcement, lead director Michel Ancel has stated that pre-production on the game had begun as early as 2007, though it would eventually lose priority to other projects such as Rayman Legends, and that Beyond Good and Evil 2 would again take a backseat in favor of development on Ancel's other upcoming game Wild. Ubisoft has continued to tease the game, featuring it at E3 2017, E3 2018, and showcasing gameplay segments as recently as 2020. However, following 2020, Michel Ancel left Ubisoft and the video game industry, though Ubisoft's financial reports claim development is still ongoing and the project has not been canceled. Obviously, the game lacks any form of release window at this time.

Yeah, except the financial crash.

Have you looked at the stock market lately? Economy is in Recession, inflation is at a 40 year high at 9.1% (it's actually closer to 18%), and at least where I live a gallon of gas costs $6.30. Hopefully people will use their heads next time they vote.

Pretty much nowhere as it is never happening. Valve said back in 2017 that HL3 development had been cancelled many years before and they have zero interest in ever making it.
It's a PR risk they don't need to take at this point. Imagine if they released it and it got bad reviews (which is likely since expectations would be super high). If the release didn't go well, it could damage their reputation and this would cut into their business with Steam. I mean there would probably even be a boycott. No sense in risking any of that for a single game.

The "for a AA [sic] video game" quantifier is a bit weaselish here so I won't say you're wrong, but the actual record holder for "a" game with the longest development is Clockwork Aquario, with over 28 years of development. BGE2 has a long way to go.

Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar took 20 years to get released, to name another example. I still can't believe that one's out.

Does anyone remember Bob's Game? There have been some not so flattering videos lately on the guy behind it, but it's an interesting story and I personally hope he finishes it some day.

The world is too small and insignificant for that game, it won't release because the world can't take it.

With Ancel leaving I have no hope for this releasing, nor a new Rayman game. He was planning on making Rayman 4 after finishing his other 2 projects.
Ubisoft must be my second most hated dev (first being Konami).

Jazz Jackrabbit 3D,Half-Life 2 Episode 3,Half-Life 2 Episode 4 Return to the Ravenholm. Still no Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 3,Sonic Adventure 3. What about those videogames/computer games modern entertainment besides Duke Nukem Forever Prototypes?

they were all cancelled and never confirmed to still be in development to this day, even the other day ubisoft said this game was still in development.
