So I've done a lot of system transferring from my console and one thing I regret is not saving my 3ds pictures I took when I was a kid. However, going back to playing face raiders I realized that the game still had a lot of my old pictures I took in the past. Infact when it comes to trying to adjust the faces, it seems the entire photo is still intact. Even more fascinating is that when playing some levels there was even more pictures that were lost still on the app. So I know it's possible that the game still has a good chunk of my old photos. However would it even been remotely possible to try to go into the games code to try to extract those pictures

The very first thing you should have done before even posting is to Google around and see if anyone has worked with this game before.

Otherwise, the next thing to do is to dump the game's save data. You can do that with Checkpoint if you edit the config in order to enable access to NAND titles, or you can just use JKSM. (This will require CFW installation, unless perhaps you have an ntrboot flashcart.)

After that you will just have to look at the dumped save data and see if you can find anything. If you're really lucky, the data will already include the image data in some easily-accessible format.

Well while looking through the save data I found a lot of files containing PHOTOF001.dat. Which I have no idea if it's that or not. Either way I'm not entirely sure how to open it

It is indeed the file containing the photo. It appears to be stored as raw image data!

You can use a program like Kuriimu2, download that and do the following.

1. Go to Tools > Raw Image Viewer

2. Go to File > Open, then select .dat file of your choice.

3. Do the following settings like in the picture attached.

4. Once it displays correctly. Go to File > Extract, and your image is saved.

Hope that helps! :)

I have the same story with these pictures. I'll try what you suggested above but to be honest, I don't really want to download a third-party app. And in general, quite difficult to give what is related to the photos and their editing. Over the past 10 years, so many features have appeared that I simply do not have time to keep up with them all. But I'm learning hard. For example, not so long ago I learned how to crop photos in Photoshop, thanks for that to this blog: https://skylum.com/how-to/how-to-cut-out-image-in-photoshop I am glad that there are people who can explain everything properly.

Not to necropost, but I wanted to add that I did this last night and managed to get 128x128 pictures of me that date as far back as 2013. Also they save images that you don't even have in your in-game "Face Collection", So I managed to find a couple of images I haven't seen in years.
