FTPD can not connect with my PC on the file explorer, it says it goes into "Passive mode", but it wont show contents of the microSD card. I basically have the same problem as seen here: https://github.com/mtheall/ftpd/issues/151
Use an ftp client on the pc side, something like Filezilla will do. Just put the 3DS's ip address, port: 5000, and connect as anonymous when it asks you..

Oh wow...it's scary to see how many people install the stuff on the console, but still have no idea what exactly they are doing....

You use them by installing and booting them. Most of the apps inside this homebrew store are either .3dsx or .cia files. And most of them have a little description what they are and what they do. These .3dsx are executables (like .exe for windows) for the homebrew launcher while the .cia files are being installed with fbi (that's a title installer) for example. When you downloaded the .cia file, the universal updater install these iirc so that they appear on your home screen. These are apps like real 3ds games. You just start them normally like a normal 3ds game ;)

You've got something mixed up there. Twilight Menu and Rosalina are two completely different things. Rosalina is a custom sysmodule with a myriad of features for both developer and end user convenience, available once the 3DS is booted. TWiLight Menu++ is an open-source DSi Menu upgrade/replacement (it's not an emulator) for the Nintendo DSi, the Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo DS flashcards.

Then you didn't read the 3ds guide completely. The finalizing page should answer a few of your questions (how to install .cia files, how to access the rosalina menu etc.).

The luma wiki is a good start for beginners ;)

What for hacks do you want?
eh it doesnt matter (randomized/ all pokemon catchable) at least. difficulity changing isnt needed.

From Universal-Updater installing is generally as simple as clicking on it and picking the format you want. It'll let you know if there's any additional steps needed at the end of the installation.
Yes, I did try that. I clicked on one homebrew game and selected cia (since I didn’t know how they differed). But after it downloaded, I had trouble finding it. It wasn’t in the cias folder, it was in the root. But when I clicked on it, there was no option to launch or or install it or anything. So what do I do after it downloads to the root? I’m assuming cias need to be installed? Do I need to open Rosalina’s menu for that?

Also, which format is better to choose for downloads? For games and important apps, I’d like them to appear on my home screen.

For how to use apps, their READMEs and wikis are usually helpful, the Universal-DB website has links to those for most apps, the README is with the source code.
Thank you! That’s the only link I’ve seen for help AFTER modding.

In general: 3DSX files are loaded from the Homebrew Launcher, CIA files are loaded from the HOME Menu, NDS (or DSI) files are loaded from TWiLight Menu++, and FIRMs are loaded from the Luma chainloader (hold START on boot)

TWiLight Menu++ is run from your HOME Menu like any other CIA app, if you don't see it reboot as DSiWare apps aren't always picked up right away.
Ok, this still left me confused, but it’s only because I haven’t used them yet, but it’s the best explanation I’ve seen so far. So thank you for that.

The Rosalina menu is assessed at any time (in 3DS mode) with L + down + SELECT (unless you change the combo). Rosalina is a part of Luma, Luma is just kinda a background thing that modifies the firmware to allow homebrew, along with some features like the Rosalina menu.
Ah, ok, thank you! I do remember seeing the button combo to access it after I finished the mod, but I forgot what it was, and then after everything I’ve been reading, I couldn’t remember where I saw it. So thank you again. 😊

For CIAs it'll just be on your HOME Menu, with all your other digital 3DS games and such. The normal menu when you turn on the 3DS.

Make sure to open any new presents, new apps are in present boxes. Also sometimes you need to reboot for it to notice them.

Most people use CIA for everything as its the most convenient, but there is a limit of 300 apps on the HOME menu so if you have a lot of games or such it may work better to use 3DSX. Since you say you want them on your HOME Menu, use CIA.

Well, I didn’t go into it blindly. I researched the CFW installs process pretty well before starting. It was obvious to me that it was a stable and trustworthy hack, and I knew exactly what I was doing when jail breaking the device and installing the CFW.

I just didn’t expect that there’d be no instructions for what to do AFTER getting the CFW on the device. Not for lack of trying though. I really did try to find info regarding what to do after the CFW is installed, but the tutorial doesn’t provide that info, so it’s not our fault if we don’t know what they do.

You use them by installing and booting them. Most of the apps inside this homebrew store are either .3dsx or .cia files. And most of them have a little description what they are and what they do. Yeah, I saw those little descriptions. They’re extremely brief and seriously lacking in detail. Especially for someone new to the scene. Some are so short and generic, they were meaningless to me.

And I downloaded one cia file (a homebrew game) and couldn’t figure out how to install it because…. no instructions!

You've got something mixed up there.
Yes, I have a lot mixed up, because I couldn’t find anything that explains what each thing is.

I knew Twilight wasn’t an emulator. I figured it was some kind of menu, but I didn’t know what it does. When would I actually need to use Twilight menu as opposed to Rosalina?

And TBH, I don’t even know what the actual *firmware* is. Is it Rosalina or Luma? Those are the two that I mostly mix up. Furthermore, I wasn’t able to find info on how to use godmode. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Then you didn't read the 3ds guide completely. The finalizing page should answer a few of your questions (how to install .cia files, how to access the rosalina menu etc.).
I did read read the guide completely. And I read the finalizing page and I even followed the links it provided. But again, the info there was lacking for noobs. Not nearly as comprehensive as the hack tutorial.

The luma wiki is a good start for beginners ;)
Thank you. I did take a look at that as well, but I didn’t have a lot of confidence in it, since the very TOP of the page says “NOTE: This wiki is currently very outdated. Information may be missing or inaccurate.”

Isn’t there anything more up-to-date and accurate?

Does clicking on them actually INSTALL them? Or does it just download them? Because I clicked on a homebrew game (a port of Valve’s ‘Portal’) and chose cia. It downloaded but I don’t think it installed. I found the cia file in the root, but I can’t find the actual game. And there was no message or anything letting me know about any extra steps like you mentioned.

That’s the only thing I’ve clicked on, since I don’t want to be clicking on things if I don’t know what I’m doing.

It should install them, if not then it's a bug in Universal-DB and I'll look into it...

Are you sure it was a CIA? I think the only Portal on U-DB is portalDS which only has nds, not CIA... If it's working correctly you should have "portalDS.nds" in your SD root. (this location can be changed in Universal-Updater settings)

I checked for new presents but there were none. I even shut down and rebooted and still didn’t see it. But the cia file is still sitting in the root of my memory card.

Yes, that’s what I want. I’ve always preferred physical games over digital, so I actually don’t have many games on my device. Maybe 20? So that shouldn’t be the problem.

Oh darn, you’re right, it’s an .nds file, not a .cia. So what do I do with .nds files? It’s not installed (that I can tell, anyway). It’s just sitting in the root of my memory card.

You don't have to 'install' NDS files, you just need TWiLight Menu++, then in TWiLight Menu++ browse to the folder their in.

By default Universal-Updater installs NDS files to the SD root so you should see it if you just scroll right in TWiLight Menu++.

I went into the directory settings. Should I change the path of 3ds files to the 3ds folder?

Ah, ok. Forgive me if this question is stupid, but was Twilight Menu already installed with the CFW, or do I have to find it in Universal Updater and install it myself? I don’t remember seeing Twilight anywhere on my device.

3DSX files default to sdmc:/3ds, which is where the Homebrew Launcher opens by default so for most people that's good.

There isn't really a 'default' place for NDS files is why they just get put in root, I personally put them in sdmc:/_roms/Homebrew.

I don't think it's installed by default from 3ds.hacks.guide, so yeah just find it in Universal-Updater and install it.

Oops, disregard that last question. I see now that it’s not pre-installed, so I just found it in the U-updater and I’m installing it now. Sorry 😅

Awesome. Thank you. 😊 Can I ask what your best recommendation is for a Discord, Reddit, or FB group that specializes in these kind of questions? It seems like everyone in this forum already has a good understanding of the softwares and their functions. I need something kind of tailored to noobs, lol.

Funny thing is, I’ve been hacking gaming systems for over 15 years (starting with the PSP), so I’m not new to hacking in general. Just new to the *3DS* hacking scene. 😉

Oh cool, I was just looking through the Universal-Server Discord and saw you there. 😁 So I’ll assume that’s a good place to find good info on those things.😉

EDIT: (btw, just in case I post there, so you’ll recognize me, my name in discord is “Valerie” with my cat as my profile pic)

For 3DS Nintendo Homebrew (the one linked on 3ds.hacks.guide) is the main server.

Universal-Server and DS⁽ⁱ⁾ Mode Hacking! are the two homebrew servers that I'm in, they're primarily focussed on Universal-Updater and TWiLight Menu++ respectively, with DS⁽ⁱ⁾ Mode Hacking! also just being the main server for DSi homebrew in general.

I did read read the guide completely.
Obviously not. Otherwise you would know how to use godmode9 or for example the rosalina menu from luma. The guide tells you that. Section 3 and 6 are the points you need.

I knew Twilight wasn’t an emulator. I figured it was some kind of menu, but I didn’t know what it does. When would I actually need to use Twilight menu as opposed to Rosalina?
And again you mixed up something here. Twilight Menu isn't a must have for a cfw user. It is just for playing nds games. When you don't play these, you don't need the twilight menu. Rosalina is a system module which has nothing to do with this menu.

And TBH, I don’t even know what the actual *firmware* is. Is it Rosalina or Luma? Those are the two that I mostly mix up. Furthermore, I wasn’t able to find info on how to use godmode.
And again...luma is the custom firmware (or better said a firmware patcher, (because this is it) but "custom firmware" sounds cooler) and rosalina is a system module from it which can be started via a button combination (L+Dpad down+Select). And godmode9 is a multipurpose tool which can do NAND and cardridge functions.

What DO you inspect then? The most important tools are installed when you followed the guide. From there you can technically do whatever you want. I dunno what needs to be specified further. It all boils down to playing 3DS games, creating backups of savegames, or playing homebrew games (or emulators) every now and then, for example. Other than that, there's not much more to explain. You can still install themes.

On 3DS firmware version 11.16 the universal otherapp is patched. Try one of this in this thread previous mentioned hack guides instead.
could you explain this sentence more? I think it will solve my problem?
((Pichaxx should still work fine, just change the otherapp to *hax version (the cfg:s ones I made) and use slotTool.3dsx to install usm.))
i change old3ds_usa.bin to otherapp.bin from otherapps_with_CfgS folder(release 1.3)
https://github.com/zoogie/unSAFE_MODE/releases/tag/v1.3
sorry this means changes otherapp.bin to 2.9alpha.bin?
