Thinking about getting a WiiU and softmodding it but I don't know if its worth it. How is N64 emulation on it, what homebrew ports are worth getting (go ahead and say tha OoT Ship on the Poopdeck mod blah blah blah), what official WiiU games are worth the time and what accessories do I need to get other than the y cable I need for the hdd? Also do not tell me to get a Switch unless you're gonna give me one.
Edited: Will the WiiU Pro Controller work with every hombrew like Usbloader Gx and Nintendont?
You can use two hard drives in one enclosure, but yes, you will need two if you want to not have to use injects.

I got mine gifted to me from a friend, so I really can't say whether it's worth it or not to buy. But I can't say I've ever really had a bad experience with mine. The hacking community is alive and well (Aroma and Tiramisu can prove that), and you can still find people online for a lot of the games on there. For games like Super Mario Maker, where Nintendo Network is slowly shutting down it's services for it, you already have a replacement service, Pretendo, which has already brought back level uploading. Miiverse has also been brought back. So with all these factors in mind, do I think it's worth it? In my opinion, I do believe it's a console worth owning in 2022.

I know there is a custom digital portal, created by one of our users for the Skylander games. But for Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions i dont know atm.

I might consider getting a WiiU if there is a way for me to play Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions without the toys.
As far as I know, that's not possible on any system other than PC, but that's only for Skylanders. I don't recall anything similar for Lego Dimensions or Disney Infinity.

If you already own a Switch, I would say no. Although I do love my modded Wii U, I wouldn't say it's for everyone. Many of the Wii U exclusives were already ported, so the main reason you should consider one is the library of games that are not on Switch. Metroid Prime Trilogy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Wind Waker HD, Xenoblade X, Wii and Gamecube, basically anything that is not already ported over and probably won't be ported over.

N64 is slightly better but a lot of games still don't work there. I once considered using a Wii/Wii U as a replacement console for N64 but the compatibility lists are depressing. Bought an N64 + x7 for it.

As a whole, Wii U has nice exclusives that are hard to emulate due to the gamepad. So probably aim for those and see what you like. Wii U pro won't work on Wii mode except for Nintendont that has support for it iirc.

I generally mostly just use Wii U for an easy to setup Wii that can work on HDMI. Most of the games I like have been ported to the switch or 3DS.

The only thing I don't like about the Wii U is the long loading times, like boot time, launching a game and exiting back to the Wii U home menu. It's just like 15 ish seconds.

I never had this issue with long load times, when I had mine all loadings were super quick.
The only issue I had was this one time when the hard drive got too fragmented and since I was using an external hard drive with no power supply, it would crash certain games. What solved me for good is copying the entire data to another drive, formatting the main drive and then copying (never move) data again but in this case, one game at a time (to prevent the system from shuffling data when copying). It is a tedious process but if you have installled all the games you want to play, without too much data management and freeing space for other games, you dont need to do this annoying process ever again. I used a 250GB hard drive and it still was about a half of size left unused, so to install every content you dont even need a very big hard drive.

I'm using a 128GB SanDisk USB, I noticed that if I don't connect my Wii U to the internet: launch a game > press home button > Close Software > Wii U home menu.

The please wait screen doesn't appear when not connected to wi-fi and it's only 10 seconds.

Does this work with USB too or do I have to buy a HDD with a y cable?

Are you sure this method will work? It's going to take ages to copy 83GB worth of games one at a time to either another 128GB USB or HDD.

I guess 15 seconds is better than waiting than more than a minute.

Theres really no way to have all the games on one hdd? Thats kinda a deal breaker especially when I don't like the y cable thing that could probably lead to power cycle problems.
There is a way to avoid that by just having either externally powered HDDs, or what I did is to get a single USB 3 hub that's powered and running two Western Digital green SSDs off of it. There's still one Y cable involved in my setup, but the Y cable also connects to the powered USB hub to get the extra juice from there instead of from the Wii U.

My route with the powered USB hub is particularly useful to me because it also allows me to power and connect the Wii U to GC adapter for GC games, the ethernet adapter, as well as a bunch of other USB devices around my TV like a bluetooth transmitter for my low latency headphones, HDMI switch for more ports, HDMI splitter for streaming, and a high quality DAC to drive my old stereo system on a TV with only fiber optical out. You could also use it as an easy charging station for various wireless controllers.

I'm using my wii u right now a lot to play DS games, and that's amazing. Really easy to install the games and, as you have a touchscreen on hand, every game is played the way it was intended to. Spirit of Tracks for example will not emulate well on anything else. (DS games usually expects you to use a resistive touch screen, so even handheld PCs will be not as good on controller for DS games)

For Lego Dimensions YES, you just need blank nfc tags and using an app on your phone called Lego Tag Editor you scan the tag, select the character/vehicle you want and then program the tag, Ive made loads using paper nfc stickers and putting them inside plastic disks, Printed some stickers out to put on the top so you know whats what.

Yes you can for Lego Dimensions, Ive made loads using blank nfc tags and an android app called Lego Tag Editor, You just scan a blank tag, select what character or vehicle you want from a drop down list and then just program the tag, I got some plastic shells, printed some lega head stickers out so you know whats what and even made a few lego characters myself to glue ontop.

The console definitely doesnt like flash drives. The only time I had major issues is when I used flash drives and I used SanDisk drives too, which is a shame because I think having to hunt for a hard drive with a separate power supply or with a Y cable was already pretty annoying even at the time. It is funny how I can connect a USB 3.0 hard drive directly fine on the Wii but to make it work on the Wii U I have to use a Y cable.

No wonder the WiiU failed...
