Don't post here questions about translating some game if you won't actively participate in this project. Being a tester doesn't count.

Just thinked it would be nice to put all informations about finished and WIP projects related to fantranslations or porting translations from other platforms to Switch ports.

Original fantranslations:

Ports of existing fantranslations / official translations:

If you are searching for someone to work together on some project, you can ask here.
If you know about project that is not on those lists, write post. I am not writing here projects related to games that were officially announced to be released on West before translation project was finished.

Informations about possible ports of other translations:
  • Cross Channel: Scenario is censored more than All Ages version available on Steam. Steam version doesn't contain Japanese language, so there is no fast way to know what should be put where.
  • MUSICUS: Scenario was heavily changed [not only h-scenes cutted, but scenario was revised in many places (not because of censorship), sometimes 75% of chapter is revised], so it requires someone to translate new parts.
  • 9-nine: Read explanation here
  • Dies Irae: doable. Tools for packing archives are in romfs. Because font in Switch release is bigger than in PC release, you need to disassemble scenario to move texts that are going out of text window to next pages, which eventually require creating new pages. Changing font size results in badly rendered glyphs.
  • DESIRE: Switch release fits only 2 lines of text in text window, which is often not enough to fit translation. Assets are using custom LZSS compression, decompression code can be found here. Currently existing official translation is pretty bad in terms of faithfulness to original script. You can find fantranslation that fixes it.
  • Eve: Burst Error R: As with DESIRE, Switch release fits only 2 lines of text in text window, which is often not enough to fit existing translation.

I am accepting offers for porting translations to Japanese games that are not otome.

Was working recently on MUSICUS, but after reviewing changes between Switch and PC version I came to the point where I don't see any reason to port translation since there are too many changes. I will just finish putting all changes to my sheet, put patched files on github and wait that maybe someone will want to translate it.

thanks for compiling this list together. hope you get round to updating it as the list grows and more people do patches.
I am accepting offers for porting translations to Japanese games that are not otome.

in fairness, there are not much choice to choose from to begin with. there are very few japan exclusive switch ports of otome games that have an English translation.

and of course, a massive thank you to everyone behind these patches.

Almost finished Summer Pockets Reflection Blue translation port and I guess i will release it in next month.
Since I had standard Reflection Blue version I have no idea if it will work with Summer Pockets + Reflection Blue DLC.
And if it's not compatible, I won't bother with adjusting to it - there was so many shit to figure out via GDB that I have enough :D

My next project will be I guess porting translation of 9-nine, since files are pretty straightforward for game with different engine than PC version. Even 18+ patch could be ported with enough patience. Only thing that can potentially block 18+ patch is figuring out opus header used in Switch version - stream is exactly like in standard opus codec, header has 0x28 size and I have no clue about audio codecs how they are build. But first things first - finishing XC3 and checking some things with Portal Collection. :P

another one to add to the list, in light of Chaos;Head Noah getting banned from Steam, the Committee of Zero fan translation group plan to patch the Switch version of the game. their patch is aimed to fix bugs in the official release and restore cut content from prior Chaos;Head releases.
https://sonome.dareno.me/2022/10/01/committee-of-zero-progress-update-8.html
Actually this doesn't fit anywhere. :P
This list is focusing on releases for games that otherwise cannot be played in English on Switch.

I was porting 9-nine translation with h-scenes, but eventually I gave up after realizing how much work it is involved in it.

Info:
  • PC engine is KiriKiri Z while Switch is using some custom engine looking like knock-off of KiriKiri Z
  • Switch engine has issues with parallel rendring sprite first animation and text, so often you see first sprite animation, and then text
  • Switch engine caches all textures until you go back to main menu, when cache is cleared, so it's impossible to restore h-scene animations without game crashing because of memory exhaustion (I have calculated that if I would bring back all h-scenes in full glory, mod would take at least 5 GB of space - and they are compressed with gzip :D)
  • Some texts in the middle of episodes were cutted or altered.
    Texts differences in episode 1 and 2:
  • Ending of each episode was altered more than previous chapters, adding different content. So they need new translation
  • Switch engine doesn't support "loopvoice" command which is used in h-scenes, you can workaround it partially by using "se" command with enabled "loop" argument
  • Scripts are stored in format similar to XML on Switch, so adding content is not an issue. Example:
    XML:
    <label *start,>
    <allimage delete=true>
    <quake stop=true>
    <bgm_stop time=0>
    <se_stop bank=-1,time=0>
    <delay speed="user">
    <initscene>
    <eval exp="[2030]=1">

    <endtrans trans=0,rule=wipe_000,wt=2000,sync=false>

    <keywait 10>
  • Switch version cannot render more than 4 lines of text at once without going out of bounds, one line supports max 44 characters fixed (yes, it's character limited, not line width limited), it's not a rare occurence to split original translated line in two
  • Switch version has bugs in original scripts (like in first episode two characters weren't deleted when background changed or in second episode in one chapter Sora's face sprite was showing when it wasn't supposed to). They were easy to fix though, but since no patch ever released, it seems studio doesn't care that much.
  • Game is matching sprites to chatacters via file name matching, and since filenames are using Japanese characters, layeredfs will refuse to load them because of bug in FS related to Unicode->Shift-JIS->Unicode conversion. Workaround is to use subsdk plugin that will redirect call for loading file into file using ascii characters.
  • Game also maintains face sprite based on character names. You need to either hook function for it to replace names in runtime or use special function for "name" command that slash (aka "/") renders what is before slash, but pushes to function pattern matching only what is after slash.
  • UI texts are stored inside executable
  • And much more related to quirks of script files

All my tools and scripts to convert audio, textures and arc archives you can find here:
https://github.com/masagrator/NXGameScripts/tree/main/9-nine

If someone would want to continue my work (which means Episode 1 complete port of translation and all cutted content without deleting Switch exclusive content from last chapter + almost finished porting of second episode translation with h-scenes), I can send my whole project folder through DM. But if nobody will write to me in a month, I'm deleting everything related to this game from my PC.

Edit: Deleted files.

For 5 years old [racial slur redacted] console there are surprisingly smol amounts of fan translations. But prolly because we have much more official translations.

it's cause the switch is such a new console and basically everything that isn't extremely niche gets localisation announcements from the very start. and even then, a lot of games - but especially VNs - get picked up officially sooner or later.

The console market is shrinking in Japan so developers look to the west more, hence official localisations. After the consoles life ends, we will see more TLs.

As an aside, masagarator, it's a shame you couldn't finish patching 9 -nine-, but thank you for trying.

Yeah, shit happens. There is one pro from this endeavor - modification of Opus Encoder that I have primarily done for 9-nine and then ported to few other games is now reused for other projects where audio restoration is involved.

For example Chaos; dual pack restoration mod for Switch from CoZ reused code from my repo to make a working opus converter for Head and Child. Good to know I have contributed to this project in some way as I am waiting for this mod.

    I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.

    It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

    @Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

    Man, that's beyond my brain :rofl: I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

    @Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

    @Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
