question related to original nintendo switch power requirements

1) since the nintendo wall AC charger outputs 5v 1.5 amps and 15v 2.6 amps

Just wanted to know if this is true:
1) 5v 1.5 amps is needed to charge the nintendo switch handheld console .. is it so?

2)15v 2.6amps is needed .. when the switch console is used in the nintendo dock ..so basically my understanding is you need more power when you are connected to the led tv via hdmi .. is it so?

Could any1 please help me clear my doubts ?

Regards
Rahul

Hi ,

Thanks for the link this has answered my question .. but i have another question .. may be you can help me with it

1) so the nintendo switch console needs 15v 1.25amps roughly .. and nintendo swotch console with doc also needs 15v 1.25 amps to function

the ac adapter outputs 15v 2.6 amps (this will cater to the above requirements) .. but ac adapter also outputs 5v 1.5 amps .. is 5v 1.5amps used for other accessories .. like if some1 wants to charge his pro controller (i am just taking an example) .. could u please help me with this doubt?

Nop, all "chargers" a.k.a. power supplies, with USB-C compliant (the nintendo one isn't full but is for other moment) have different voltage modes, selected by the device plugged on the power supply.

once the device has selected a voltage that's is the only voltage on the line. the amperage is the MAX current what a device can drain from source at these voltage, not always receiving that value.

if you have a device, by example, the dock asking for 15V and you need to charge another device, the internal circuit of the dock have a voltage converter which give to the USB ports 5V (or the voltage asked by the device connected to it)

thanks for the detailed answer ..so my question is :

1) i understood that nintendo console only needs 15volts "<2.6amps"
2) i understood that nintendo console with dock needs 15volts "<2.6amps"
3) i understood that the nintendo's AC wall adapter has 2 different output voltages 15v 2.6amps & 5v 1.5amps

what my question is (if you can answer) .. in which case would the 5v 1.5amps(of the AC wall adapter) be used?

When the device connected to the source supply ask for it.

on the case of the Nintendo console, the 5 volt is asked by the console on some times:

  • While negotiating new voltage after you connect the charger to port.
  • if the console is on off state or on RCM state the console couldn't negotiate other voltage so stay at 5 V.
  • When you connect the charger but the console batter it's almost full, the voltage could stay at 5V

YOU CAN NOT JUST CONNECT A POWER SUPPLY OF 15 V directly to a USB-C device, it will fry, all devices always are expecting 5V; ONLY after a successful negotiation the internal circuitry of the console is ready to handle the 15V

5V/1.5A when it is in handheld mode, when it is docked the system it use 15V/2.6A, the dock asks for specified voltage when docked, people using third party dock bricked because the dock supply the wrong voltage than what the system asked for.

thats .. this is something (that is very logical) .. thanks for sharing this information ..

Hello, there, if battery is not full, on handheld mode the console can ask for 15V too:

One more question I have :

So I have determined that the Ac adapter has 5 wires, in my case :

1) white wire : 5 volts
2) black : ground
3) Blue : sense wire
4) white : 5 volts
5) black : ground

PS: I am able to get these values .. but I am not able to get the amps reading on the multimeter .. as I feel the power adapter is shutting itself down when I am trying to calculate the AMPS via a multimeter .. any idea about the AMPS ?

Hi buddy, you should read USB(-C) specs, USB now is not as easy as used to be, is not only about Voltage and Amperage, it's about PWMs, datalines, current and voltage differentials.

As my teacher used to say, do not try to invent the hot water.

if you are trying to create a "charger" is a lot easier to buy a 35W PD USB-C charger.

if your interest is academic, read the RFC about the protocols and electronics, today the charging process involves handshaking and communication, also resistor values on different datelines.

thanks for the heads up .. I am not really building a charger .. just a few questions are coming to my mind .. hence I am asking these ..
