Thing is, something like it should have already been feasible where one player has a gamepad and one has the TV, yet nothing has ever surfaced in this regard. There are Game Boy (Color) cores in retroarch that can emulate 2 GBCs at once on the Wii U (plus a really old Wii homebrew called gb4gb could emulate up to 4 Game Boys on the Wii at once). Feasibly it all should be possible with separate displays on the Wii U at least through the GBC, but no one that would know how to make such a thing has really surfaced and shown an interest as far as I know. Maybe someday though, one can always dream
We can keep dreaming I guess... but so many great things have been developed for the Wii U that I never even dreamed of to begin with. I hope it continues even as the console keeps ageing! If only Nintendo cared as much about the Wii U as we all do.

I imagine a homebrew take on something like Pac Man Vs. could totally be doable too. Would love to see some games that give a third party a different unique expereience from the 2 players on the GamePads. Something like this really does open up the possibilities of what could be done with the Wii U, though they would be experiences aimed for very niche situations. Still, I can only imagine Nintendo would have released some sort of Wii Play/Nintendoland experience tailor made around using 2 Game Pads had they ever enabled the feature.

I love speculating about the possibilities, here are experiences I think we feasibly could see enter the Wii U scene for 2 GamePads:

-This Space Game
-Pac Man Vs.
-Liero (adapted as I mentioned earlier)
-Custom version of Spy Vs. Spy where each player plays on their own Gamepad, and then when you enter the same room to fight, that takes place on the TV (I loooove this idea so much)
-Ok, this is a dumb one, but I kinda think it's great at the same time. Take a basic game like the original Super Mario Bros. 1, and the player on the TV plays as Mario as normal, but the other player(s) play as one random enemy from within the level on their respective Game Pad, they can jump like Mario, but want to hide from Mario that they're a sentient enemy, so they should work to get to Mario to kill him, without being obvious at the same time, being a random enemy each level, the Mario player never initially knows which enemies to be more cautious around.
-Multiple Game Boy (or god willing, GBA) emulators, one per screen, able to link up

I can probably go on with weird ideas like that Mario one if I keep thinking about it, and perhaps I will later. Point is I see lots of possibilities here and I hope we see something more as we move forward.

Imagine the possibilities, for example if Nintendont was ported to Wii U mode the extra processing power and two gamepads could be used to emulate two GBAs for Four Swords Adventures and other games utilizing the GBA connectivity for multiplayer. Not that I think it's likely we will see Nintendont being ported, and adding GBA emulation onto it would not be trivial, but one can dream.

Honestly I don't think that's really a possibility at all. I think the best hope we have for that kind of thing is hacking a DS or 3DS with GBARunner, having that wirelessly connect with Nintendont tricking it into thinking it's a proper GBA. I saw someone suggest that once, and realistically I think its the best chance we have of GBA to GameCube connectivity on the Wii U. I can't fathom it ever getting accomplished with a GamePad (or 2) despite how amazing that would be.

"All that could be changed if Nintendo just added support for a second Wii U GamePad. It’s not just the possibility of two-player Off-TV support that excites us either: two screens away from the TV could open up all sorts of exciting options for asymmetrical multiplayer gameplay. Don’t just take it from us: that’s straight from Nintendo genius Shigeru Miyamoto himself. "It's very interesting from a gameplay perspective idea because there are a lot of possibilities with two GamePads,” he told IGN at last summer’s E3. Imagine a game of Splatoon with six people all in the same room, or a Star Fox game where two Arwing pilots try to stealthily take down Andross’ forces, who have greater manpower but no idea of their location. Miyamoto must have a whole list of similar ideas stuffed in a drawer somewhere.

Don’t tell us it isn’t technically possible to pair two GamePads to one system either. It is. "From a technical standpoint, I think if we decided to pursue that, technically we would be able to and we can perform system updates that would allow for that," Miyamoto explained."

A prophecy fulfilled by an enthusiast.

Nintendont in Wii mode has pretty harsh RAM limitations, Nintendont in Wii U mode would need to emulate graphics, because it uses a different GPU.

It's problematic to say the least.

Gary is one of the few developers keeping the Wii U alive and relevant close to 10 years after the Wii U was released!
To be fair, the Wii U deserved more love than it got, but at the same time, gamers deserved a more powerful system too. The graphical differences between the Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U are so incrimental it hurts.
