Thanks. That was some useful knowledge. Can you tell me what the most popular tool is right now for manipulating NSP/XCI files? Everything I find was created in 2018 so not sure if they're discontinued projects or just have no need for updates anymore. I was looking at Switch Backup Manager for instance. I have an XCI file that contains the base game and the update. I wanted to split them into separate NSP files.
There are only 2 tools (to my knowledge)
Switch army knife (sak)
And nscbuilder

Depends on what you mean by "manipulating". Switch Backup Manager, as the name implies, is more so geared for managing your backups on the computer. If you're looking for a tool for converting between .NSP & .XCI files then you don't need such a tool. Majority of the modern, competent title installers support installing both .NSP and .XCI files. When its installing an .XCI file, its actually converting it to an .NSP file and installing it all on the fly without any input from the user.

How do u update then? most updates are nsp? Im having a issue with splatoon 3 xci base but only have a nsp update
The updates usually come as NSPs. They work with base games installed from XCIs no problem.

Like @Draxzelex said, when an XCI is installed, it's actually converted to an NSP first, so effctively all Switch games are installed from NSPs.
