several months ago my sd card i used for 3ds cfw disappeared, though i swear it still booted back then. now i get a black screen full of text with the error "undefined instruction". i know this is because the sd card is missing. how do i salvage this without the card? i was planning on restoring my cfw with a blank one i found.

alright that worked. is there anything i need to do now to restore the cfw to full functionality?

i won't be able to continue this for a bit though, since i just noticed the battery is bloated, and nintendo doesn't offer new ones for the smaller n3ds model i have. could anyone link a good replacement that ships to the US?

Well, firstly get a new battery. I'll check Amazon first.

Then, for full CFW, I would probably just go through 3ds.hack.guide's removal guide, then do it all from scratch for a fresh start.
If you don't care about it being fresh though, just install FBI, and put the latest GodMode9 on your SD card in /luma/payloads.
You might also wanna update your version of Boot9Strap for easier diagnosing for FIRM issues via the Notif LED, but you don't really HAVE to update B9S.

But, they already have full cfw since they can get arm errors. removing it will just be more redundant than anything.

none of what i'm seeing on amazon is specified as official, and i've seen third party batteries warned against. i know i've had awful experience with third party vita chargers

Ah. Yeah, I don't think there's any real way to get an "official" KTR-003 (N3DS battery) without just buying a whole 'nother N3DS tbh. (Also, if you ever plan to upgrade to a N3DSXL, doing a system transfer with homebrew is a bit bullshit in my experience but still quite doable)

I know, I just still prefer to make sure everything is fully up-to-date and not some mish-mash of everything (which my Switch homebrew setup almost was)

Cfw uninstall is generally not recommended mainly because if there's some software issues in the system, like system file corruption, when you uninstall cfw you have no other way to fix your system, other than getting a ntrboot to restore some homebrew functionality, which defeats the purpose of doing the cfw uninstall in the first place.
It's only advisable to do so if you follow the uninstall cfw page on the 3ds.guide site and following all the instructions to make sure there won't be any complications after it's done..

There's a difference between making the homebrew apps etc. Up to date and installing cfw completely from the system.. And it's not a "mish-mash" of anything, if the system has cfw, it's easy to get back the homebrew apps in the case the sd card was lost (as in OP's case). He should just follow the guide here and he will have everything up and running in no time. 🙂
