'Alone in the Dark' remake announced

During yesterday's THQ Nordic's Digital Showcase 2022, the remake of a classic horror title was announced: Alone in the Dark. The series started back in 1992 and had a couple of sequels and spin-offs. However, this remake is said to be a "re-imagination" of the series, with recurring characters but a new story that is said to be faithful to the original. Players will be able to choose between Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood to explore Derceto Manor and solve the puzzles and fight the monsters within.

The newly-announced Alone in the Dark will launch on PC, Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5.

Deep in the 1920’s south, Emily Hartwood’s uncle has gone missing. Together with private investigator Edward Carnby, she embarks on a journey to Derceto Manor to uncover the secrets of this mysterious place and the circumstances of her relative’s vanishing. Encounter strange residents, nightmarish realms, dangerous monsters and ultimately unveil a plot of rising evil. At the intersection of reality, mystery, and insanity, an adventure waits that will challenge your core beliefs. Who can you trust, what will you believe, and what will you do next?

In addition to Alone in the Dark, THQ Nordic's Digital Showcase also featured other games announcement:

  • Tempest Rising
  • Space for Sale
  • Wreckreation
  • Gothic 1 Remake
  • Jagged Alliance 3
  • Outcast 2 - A New Beginning
  • SpongeBob - The Cosmic Shake
  • AEW: Fight Forever
  • Knights of Honor II: Sovereign
  • Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed
  • Way of the Hunter
  • Stuntfest - World Tour
  • The Valiant

No Nintendo Switch version.. :(
Developers hate money. Capcom pushed for the Switch to get 4GB of memory so they can port their games to it, and they won't even port the resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes to the device. (They should hire Panic Button to do it, if they can't/won't.)

It's still a remake regardless that it came out 30 years ago, they'd rather do this as they already have the story, music, etc lined up and only have to work on remaking it for modern consoles.

The fact that you don't get why remakes are a shameless lazy product baffles me. Ubisoft's remaking Splinter Cell rather than make a new one (with Michael Ironside, not some voice actor) and as a fan of SC it's disappointing they're not putting much effort, but this is Ubisoft so who's surprised. :glare:

It's a new story though. Your comments lean towards this being a remake in the same sense as The Last of Us Part 1. That is not the case here. This is an entirely new game.

I put an old Indian cover atop the game so that it will never be released.
Seriously, if they want to do something with the series, they should update the original game. Stay true to the characters, story and settings. 4k chicken monster ftw!
how could they update this?

the game is suposed to be scary and if they just updated to 4k people would just laugh instead of being scary, you cant simply remaster a game so old and expect it to work, a game like this remastered only would loose every once of horror it had becuase nowadays it looks ridiculous you need a full on remake to make the game actually scary or else it would be mocked for eternity with a 4k remaster...

Jeez, why must publishers remake everything nowadays? Make a new game instead, give us a new experience.
some games do need remakes, the original one sure does, because every once of horror it had back in the day is now a laughing stock with those graphics, dont know why people are against remakes when the game was released 1992 so it has been 30 years... most gamers never played at all since the game was never ported to anything other than the 3d0 which most people nowadays dont even know what it is.

One thing is like remaking the last of us which had a remaster last gen another is remaking a 30 year old game, which most gamers never got a chance to play to this day...

More polygons, natch. Fresh up the character models, make 'em look good, make the door monster's gaping maw give you nightmares, but stay true to what it does in the room. By all means have a playable original low-poly version as well, cuz that's it's own special kinda horror.
Also: if I'm jumbling the words remake/remodel/update/remaster/etc... just understand what I'm saying beyond whatever terminology is current. I have a great love for this game. Spent a lot of money on a 3DO just to live in that world. I would LOVE to see the original be given some TLC from talented artists. I consider the game an important classic.

what you want to do is a remake them lol changing models, environment and probably quality of life improvements its what a remake does... a remaster is simply porting the game improve resolution/framerate and maybe afew higher detailed textures and call it a day.

So yeah you want a remake, remasters are easy to do and little time of development, since they dont touch up mechanics, animations or much at all, basically the same as running the game on an emulator and give it afew touch ups, if you want stuff actually changed you need a remake.

This game wouldn't look good remastered at all, everything is barren do to technical limitations at the time from environments, animations, mechanics, models and such, you couldnt make a good remaster. some games do need a new total remake to get in with the times, specially early 3d games.

2d games aged much better than early 3d ones sadly.

Looks good and the idea to do a reimagining instead of just a straight remake - or even worse - a remaster is the best in this case. We're talking about an early 3D game from 1992 that, by today's standards, can be even called unplayable by younger generation. Some might say that they should just remake graphics and leave experience otherwise intact - but, to be honest, gameplay is just stiff, level design - not that great and even if story is interesting, the original game was just too short. You can beat it in 3-4 hours. So of course the new game has to be just a "reimagining" - they'll take basic concepts of the original, enhance the story, make new levels/puzzles etc.

And I'm happy, because that means we will get a new game, that will be just familiar enough for players that remember the first game. And if you want to play the original game - hey, it's still digitally available for cheap no problem.

I played the DOS version when it released in 1992 (on my kickass 486-DX33 with 8MB RAM) and it frightened the crap out of me. It was the combination of the slow movement and creaky sound effects, together with the amazing (for the time) 3D graphics.

Anyone who likes the original Resident Evil games owes it all to this Infogrames masterpiece. I'm not sure it's going to offer anything for newer generations but I hope they do it justice.

Looks like every other horror survival game.
Gimmie the weird ghosts, the ghost pirates.
The monster at the door if you try to leave early.

This just looks like a bland silent hill rip off but with bits of the original alone in the dark story inspiring it maybe, barely.

The original you were alone, in that mansion you had no friends, only the odd monsters around you and bits of text from what sanity was still there.
With a little bit of goof perhaps but hey low poly graphics and such.

Hopefully it's a good game in it's own right but faithful is a bit of stretch.

Eh looks more like a silent hill rip off.
Not very faithful to the originals sides maybe the main premise.
Not very alone with all those characters about let alone in the dark.

I hope it will be a good game in it's own right but the original dos games still do it best.
Even if they are a bit goofy these days.
Fighting ghosts and other weirdness was part of its charm, that unexplainable weirdness.

I would like to see a 1:1 faithful remake or the like though.
Like that Resident evil remake on gamecube or heck RE2 remake.

Unlike something like The Last of Us, this game is old enough that I could actually justify it needing a remake and/or remaster. I know it came out on the 360, but it was a horrible excuse of using the license. Hopefully they can give it the proper remake it deserves. And again, at least they aren't trying to remake/remaster it on 3 subsequent generations of consoles. that just feels like a cash grab to me.

Well new games arent guaranteed to be good either. They can be a risk to play. Honestly I would rather have a remake of a good classic game, than a brand new IP, sequel/prequel that could be really shitty.
