I don't know, but you can install an edat through a pkg, but not a rap/rif.

Some NPS PKG files come with EDAT's inside. Shouldn't EDAT files come separately?

btw, you can install a pkg anywhere on the hdd using ForceInstallTo iirc. I think that's the command anyway as it's been years. I personally hate the ps3 scene, so I hate talking about it. I wish I could forget everything.

That way would the PS3's HDD be spared? What about potential problems?

app_home is for debugging games, don't use it. PKG, I don't know. it may be deprecated, but you can install pkgs from anywhere except for the tv/video tier, as long as you modify some xml files. a usb hub, only if it's not self powered probably. the system will tell you if you're taxing the usb ports, but by that time, it will likely be too late.

I'm not finding the "/dev_hdd0/PKG" location but I've read about the "/dev_hdd0/GAMEZ" one. What is it for?

Q. Where do I put my game backups (ISOs) on CFW?
A. Each ISO type goes in the respective folder on the hard drive (dev_hdd0). You may need to create them first: PS3ISO, PS2ISO, PSXISO, PSPISO, BDISO, DVDISO. Extracted PS3 ISOs go in GAMES if on internal, and GAMEZ if on the network or external storage.

I assume you mean storage, as memory typically refers to RAM. The ISOs are in the PS2ISO folder. Memory card images are in the savedata/vmc as .VM2 files. The PS2 emulator should be in dev_flash. FTP maxes out at about 21MB/s. An alternative to FTP: format USB device as NTFS, transfer using Managunz.

I don't know. I've never used internal storage with the ps2. I wouldn't bother with internal storage and ftp. It's gotta be slow as fuck.

I can't access the HDD/SSD/SSHD (although I don't have one so that might have to do with it), the CD/DVD and i.LINK content, just the USB and the MC one. Anyway, I just asked out of curiosity and I use FileZilla Client to upload apps to the MC.

I was talking about the PS2.

I've read the term "internal memory" (at least in other occasions) referring to flash memory in the video game context, I think. I don't know the right term. In this case, shouldn't internal storage refer to the PS2 Fat's HDD/SSD/SSHD and not flash memory (the PS2 doesn't have any)? The term is misleading.
