Thanks, that's good to know. I'll have to look whether we can find remains of that in the Steam release, maybe we can re-enable it.

Not sure what froid_san's tools are capable of (they don't seem to be public). Is there any type of game file you can't open yet or you'd want to know more about?

The tools he made allow me to edit text and graphics and insert them back into the games. froid_san told me he lost everything in a hard drive crash so I'm on my own now. But since I'm just editing text and graphics, and the tools do that, and I don't really have any technical issues at the moment, things are going fine. I haven't heard from him since 2020, but I did send a message today asking if I could release his tools when I release my patch. If I don't hear from him, then I can't release the tools. Sorry.

There are a couple things I'd like to mention that came up. Some of this maybe be widely know, I don't know, but since you asked, here they are. (I know this is a very long post, so sorry about that):

1.I would have loved to get the 4 t-shirt Agumon enabled somehow. The only way to get them is to import a Japanese CS1 save file where you have already acquired them. The Agumon with the Tower Records t-shirt and headphones is so rare that it will most likely never get dumped. (Only Tower Records ever announced the promotion to get the DLC code from buying the CS1 at their stores soundtrack. As far as I can tell, Bandai Namco never announced this promotion and then only picture I could find was on Tower Records' twitter.) There as also apparently going to be a western DLC of a Shibuya Records Agumon, but no graphics for this were made and the DLC was never released. That Agumon is probably what the placeholder t-shirt texture that appears to say "corporate logo" in Japanese is for. That's all far beyond my abilities, though.

2. Did anyone ever find a way to restore Bearmon, Chimeramon, and Skull Baluchimon? Their textures are in the game, but there are no character portraits, and I have no way of knowing if anything else remains, as I can't get into any any files other than text and graphics.

3. There's a lot of cut dialogue in CS1. Most of it is for the CS1 player character. It turns out they were originally supposed to be much less of a silent protagonist. No idea how to enable it, as that's beyond my abilities and the scope of the project.

4. There is one other thing that came up. I'm sure somebody else has probably figured this out already, and I'd forgotten all about it until now, but I may as well mention it.

When I started this (and was still posting on reddit), someone named "darkmaster_12" had messaged me. His account has since been deleted, but he had told and shared a link to a now-deleted unlisted youtube video of how he'd edited 2 boss-only Special Attacks into the game for normal use (Arkadimon Ultimate's Exile Spear and Grand Locomon's L Express Attack) but he dismissed my efforts as "research" only and never went into too much detail about how he did what he did and didn't release his work to my knowledge and he said what he was doing wasn't "relevant" to me.

I still had the messages saved in my reddit inbox, so here are the last 4 messages of our conversation before he went silent. These are the only relevant ones to this topic:

darkmaster_12: "I've already put some of the cut skills back into the game on my own research. only one of them seems to have a working animation. (two, technically)
the skills digimon have/learn are controlled by the farm database. not sure why you would need to go into there for your text-based research though."

Me: "I'm not just doing research. I'm working on a patch with someone and I'm editing the text to improve the translation. I saw the cut attacks and was reminded of you and wanted to see if putting the skills back in was possible. Was L Express Attack the one? What was the other one? Is there anything you can tell me about how you did this? Which file is the farm database? It seems a shame to be doing a patch and not try to do this."

darkmaster_12: "Exile Spear is the other one.
I just did some save editing after reverse engineering the database, which was weeks/months of analyzing the bytes and figuring out how everything connects.
I'm currently in the process of trying to restore voice clips to player digimon, from the royal knights."

Me: "Have you documented your findings or had any intention of releasing anything? This information would be very helpful to us. And others, I'm sure."

Extracting and rebuilding the archives and mbe (to CSV) files should be easily possible with DSCSTools, if you ever need to replace your current tools.

1. You mean this one? ;)
The only problem getting them ingame should be that there is no legit path towards them. But with save-editing or modding (evolution paths, encounters, gifting via script) it would be fairly easy to obtain them.
Their IDs are 761-765

2. There are only textures remaining for those Digimon, no models.
However, we are making progress at importing new models into the game, so there might be mods backporting Digimon from other games. (In fact, I did a proof of concept with Bearmon a while ago, but it wasn't fully functional)
You can get into models with Pherakki's Blender Plugin.

3. Doing that would probably require modifying the scripts, but that could end up being a lot of work.
But the technology for it is available, scripts can be decompiled using NutCracker and recompiled using the regular squirrel 2.2.4 64-bit compiler.

4. Based on those messages I'm not sure if they actually modified the digimon_farm_para.mbe to get a new learnset or just save/memory edited things to get them.
Either way, for modding you'd want to do the former, which luckily is as simple as changing a number in a spreadsheet once it is unpacked.

I thought perhaps people might be interested in an example of the cut dialogue. It's too unwieldy to post all of the cut dialogue, obviously but here is a cutscene where some was cut. (I retranslated the cut dialogue as well, as there's no point in skipping a couple lines in a single conversation in a big text file.) I chose this scene because it was short and didn't need all that much to be fixed.

This is the scene after Nokia forms her team the Rebels and marchs off with them. The player character is watching them leave. And then Yuugo shows up:

Yuugo:
......

Yuugo:
......Where...is she going, I wonder?

Player Character:
?!

Yuugo:
What's the matter? You look awfully surprised. Did you think I was a yuurei again?

Player Character (Cut Dialogue Choice):
Choice 1 = Why are you here?
Choice 2 = Have you been watching all this happen, by any chance?
Choice 3 = Are you going to join the Rebels after all?

Yuugo:
If......

Yuugo:
If she ever happens to face off against some truly evil hackers...I want you to step in and protect her.

Player Character:
???

Yuugo:
I cannot bring myself to let her put herself in any real danger in her zeal to protect Digimon...

Yuugo:
Moreover...

Yuugo:
I don't want to see EDEN claim any more victims.

Player Character (Cut Dialogue Choice):
Choice 1 = Why are you asking me to do this?
Choice 2 = Who on Earth are you?
Choice 3 = You should join the team, then...

Yuugo:
...I'll see you around.

Well enough. I'm hoping to get it released before the start of summer. It's on track for that. Sorry it's taken so long, but this is a lot of text to get through by myself.

So, I'm getting closer to being done. At my current pace, I would guess July or August, probably. So, not before Summer, but definitely during Summer for sure. The last of the text I have left is the longest stuff.
Again, sorry to make everyone wait so long, but this is 2 whole RPGs worth of text to get through.
Please hang in there!

No problem.

Take your time, is not like the Vita isn't getting new fan made stuff all the freaking time even if some of it runs like my 2014 laptop trying to run Pyschonauts 2. :)

So, I've finally gotten done with the 4 longest remaining files in the game, although it took longer than I had anticipated.
I've also got done with all the graphics that needed editing (all 81 of them.)
I still have a bunch of smaller files to go.
Then, I have some revising to do here and there, nothing major.
I'm aiming for sometime before the end of August, hopefully.

Is this the "best" Digimon game for the Vita?
Yes. Both CS games have more features in this game versus the other versions. CS1 has player costumes and the Digimon added for HM, you can transfer Digimon between your CS1 and HM save files, and there's customizable music for certain locations like the Detective Office and for things like Evolution. All the CS1 DLC is built into CS1 and available in-game as well, except for those 4 versions of Agumon wearing the t-shirts.

What about gameplay because it looks like Digimon Adventure for the psp?

Yes, that's pretty much it. That PSP game was made before this. There are some differences, like you can't Evolve during battle like in the PSP game, you get a lot more Digimon, and it's less linear, but on the whole it builds off of (and improves upon) the PSP game's gameplay and has an original story.

So, I have 3 side quests left to do, which are split up across 33 small text files.
Then there are some revisions to do, nothing too major.
Then I just need to compile the patch, write the documentation, and get it uploaded somewhere.
So, I had hoped by the end of August, but that turned out to be a bit optimistic. I'm very sorry about that.
And I don't want to rush myself, especially this close to the finish line.
So, barring any disasters, the final release date will be sometime in September.
