'Alone in the Dark' remake announced

During yesterday's THQ Nordic's Digital Showcase 2022, the remake of a classic horror title was announced: Alone in the Dark. The series started back in 1992 and had a couple of sequels and spin-offs. However, this remake is said to be a "re-imagination" of the series, with recurring characters but a new story that is said to be faithful to the original. Players will be able to choose between Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood to explore Derceto Manor and solve the puzzles and fight the monsters within.

The newly-announced Alone in the Dark will launch on PC, Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5.

Deep in the 1920’s south, Emily Hartwood’s uncle has gone missing. Together with private investigator Edward Carnby, she embarks on a journey to Derceto Manor to uncover the secrets of this mysterious place and the circumstances of her relative’s vanishing. Encounter strange residents, nightmarish realms, dangerous monsters and ultimately unveil a plot of rising evil. At the intersection of reality, mystery, and insanity, an adventure waits that will challenge your core beliefs. Who can you trust, what will you believe, and what will you do next?

In addition to Alone in the Dark, THQ Nordic's Digital Showcase also featured other games announcement:

  • Tempest Rising
  • Space for Sale
  • Wreckreation
  • Gothic 1 Remake
  • Jagged Alliance 3
  • Outcast 2 - A New Beginning
  • SpongeBob - The Cosmic Shake
  • AEW: Fight Forever
  • Knights of Honor II: Sovereign
  • Destroy All Humans! 2 - Reprobed
  • Way of the Hunter
  • Stuntfest - World Tour
  • The Valiant

I remember back in the day playing this on my 386 and getting spooked by the Picasso looking set of polygons you found entering in some room in the middle of the Manor (bad memory, but I think it was to the right of some staircase). Point is, not sure if the low-poly spookiness was intended horror, but it was horrific.

Jeez, why must publishers remake everything nowadays? Make a new game instead, give us a new experience.
It's a reboot attempt.. since the last entry in the series was released way back in 2008 (not sure if it's by the same devs). They wanna gamers to come fresh to this game without worrying about the story of the previous games..
And I get what you're saying, it's just like movies now.. but i guess if the end result is good it wouldn't matter that much imo, if not then.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I put an old Indian cover atop the game so that it will never be released.
Seriously, if they want to do something with the series, they should update the original game. Stay true to the characters, story and settings. 4k chicken monster ftw!

I like how the gbatemp banner crops things here.

I mean... Am i the only one who sees this as 'ONE IN THE DA'? :P

Edit: Erm... The alone in the dark remake I don't care about, but a sequel for outcast? Now THAT is something I'm keeping an eye on. :D

The original looks like a spooky version of Runescape.

Never played any of these games. I got one of the modern sequels as a bundled CD with a graphics card I bought a long time ago, but could never get the CD key to work. I do love the idea though, and now that Atari is no longer behind this I might actually give it a shot since there's a non-zero chance that it won't be shit.

the original came out 30 years ago, a lot of people never heard of it. It's going to be a new experience for the majority of the people that play it.

Why do people complain that a game exists? You don't want it so no one should have it, got it.
It's still a remake regardless that it came out 30 years ago, they'd rather do this as they already have the story, music, etc lined up and only have to work on remaking it for modern consoles.

The fact that you don't get why remakes are a shameless lazy product baffles me. Ubisoft's remaking Splinter Cell rather than make a new one (with Michael Ironside, not some voice actor) and as a fan of SC it's disappointing they're not putting much effort, but this is Ubisoft so who's surprised. :glare:

I actually liked the last game. Except for the driving level. The way they structured the game was class, and had a lot of interesting mechanics, like the exploding molotov cocktails by shooting at them, the inventory and the movie-like structure simulating the chapters in a DVD movie.

I don't think it got a decent chance.

And it was a reboot of sorts, with a lot of promise if they wanted to follow up on that story.

And it had a great limited edition. I liked the developers talking about how the game was a project of passion. And it actually shows.

Honestly, I think it's because publishers/devs see that is what people want. The number of times I go to a video on an old game or view a discussion, it's "I wish this was ported to Switch. Or I wish this game was remade." Yes there are occasionally "This game was awesome, sequel please!" but in general users are asking for these ports/remakes.

I don't mind them occasionally and I'm not saying we don't get new games but this generation of consoles sees an extroidary amount of remakes/remasters/collections/ports.
