I've been looking at the instructions for ntrboot, and I have a question: what would happen if the Luma3DS boot.firm file was used before installing boot9strap with the SafeBS9Installer.firm file? They seem like they're the same "type" of file... hopefully nothing bad would happen if someone mixed them up?

You should follow the ntrboot cfw guide and do exactly as it tells you.. why are you asking? Because if you've already finished the cfw installation then their no worry if you swapped both files accidentally, the console wouldn't boot to the home menu without the Luma3DS's boot.firm file on the root of the sdcard.

Hey guys! How do I mod Smash 3DS? All I really want to do is add a single skin to the game (Mr. L), and that's it. But I haven't found any sort of guide that's been helpful. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Ntrboot can be considered to be "one-time B9S" (full access to everything from boot time on).
B9S tries loading boot.firm from SD first. If you provide any valid FIRM file on the SD, B9S will start it -- same for ntrboot. The normal thing to to with ntrboot is starting SafeB9SInstaller so you can permanently install B9S. Any other firm file can be used as well (Well, I didn't try ever last thing that exists). If you mix Luma and the installer up nothing bad will happen.

Ntrbooting other files can even be helpful:
  • Using Luma3DS as boot file for ntrboot can in fact be useful for gaining access to homebrew software without permanent modification. A good example is Checkpoint to extract important saves from a stock 3DS.
  • Using GodMode9 as boot file enables backing up the NAND before any modification (answering "no" to the question about the essentials backup on this one occasion). Interesting for purists who want to be able to go back to a virgin state -- which I wouldn't recommend as it is forced NAND restore.

Well that depends, is this skin was pre-made by someone or did you make it yourself? If it's like any game hacks & mods you have to enable "game patching" in Luma3DS Menu (you access it by holding select on boot), and putting the mod files inside the Luma folder that's on the root of the sdcard..

The skin was pre-made. Do I just have to drop the files into the Luma folder? That seems too easy. XD

ah yes, I forgot about the Guide section.

I'll add some of them, but users could just check the Faqs and Guide sections too.
I have a problem when I try to boot to the home screen it says arm 11 data abort core 0 translation - page and when I use luma 9.1 the screen is just black with the power light staying on

What firmware is your 3ds on? Regardless you should update Luma3DS to the latest version, just put the Boot.firm on the root of the sdcard overwriting the older one.
If you're not sure about what firmware you have, boot into the recovery mode and update your system, or remove the sd card and update it through the system settings as you normally would..

Does it boot to the home menu when the sd card is not inserted? If so, you might want to check the sd card for errors with h2testw. Backup the sd card's content before doing so.
Test it with the read & write setting.
Format it as FAT32 32kb clusters before and after the test. Then post the result here, we'll see if it's culprit or something else..

No. Just do exactly as i said in my previous reply.
Update: I tested the card and it was fine so then I formatted it 3 times in a row and I put it back in and now it boots to the home screen but then when I tried to open homebrew it gave me the error Arm 11 core 1 data abort translation - section boss and a bunch of numbers so now its stuck at the home screen unable to launch anything without crashing

You can launch Rosalina and reinstall all the homebrew apps (cias), fbi, homebrew launcher, etc. Use new files (redownload them).
Also if you don't have any installed games or saves, i would delete or move the Nintendo 3ds folder that's on the root of the sdcard to some safe place, and inserting the sd card to the system so it would create a new clean one. That would rule out file corruption on the Nintendo 3ds folder.
