Can anybody tell me why retro game handhelds are on the rise lately?

I prefer the EDGB on AliExpress. It's about $25 to $30 on average, between sellers. But it's an Everdrive GB X5 hardware clone that's really good quality. Much better than the EZ-Flash Jr, and it's half the price. (And obviously significantly cheaper than a REAL Everdrive GB X5).
For the record, these are actually clones of the legacy Everdrive GB, which predates the X series. The X5 uses PSRAM rather than flash for much faster ROM loading and is also much more power efficient.

The EDGB clones on Ali are respectable carts though.

I see a couple of different looking cards, which is the best bang for buck?

Internal modchip for V1 Switch is very cheap and easy, I reboot between online sys and hacked emu without a second thought.
I am not comfortable installing a modchip until I have a second system. It’s an idea but conform level is low and the retroid is cheaper than another Switch

The Retroid is also one of the worst when it comes to ergonomic feel and overall useability. An Anbernic would have sorted you better with a clean Linux based firmware. Except those can't do much beyond PSP level. You go higher power like your Retroid is you need to use Android, which personally I really don't mind and actually prefer to Linux based systems. On Android you have 3 contenders right now, Anbernic RG353p, a SNES like 4:3 3.5inch screen controller that will do you for simple PSP level stuff not beyond, then the RG552, which is considerably better but again will not go beyond Dreamcast. Then you have the Odin that's the holy grail right now, that thing is a beast and can do up to and most PS2 stuff. Also awesome to stream with.

I actually quite enjoy the look and feel of the Retroid ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and it’s emulation is on point for what I am using it for. I didn’t go with the Anbernic because of the chipset is starting to really grow long in the tooth. Idk, I am digging my Retroid, but eventually I will be getting an Anbernic at some point.

I have the one in the bottom-right, and it's fantastic. Build quality is top-notch as well. Can be gotten cheaper than that though.
