[Copy of my own Reddit post on r/WiiUHacks.]

I installed Mocha onto my SD card quite a long time ago. 2 years ago. It worked fine using a measly 32GB SanDisk USB Flash, but now when I use a 1TB WD Passport Hard Disk on it, Mocha does not recognize its existence. I have tried googling all around but found absolutely no helpful methods. My goal is to back up my entire 32gb NAND onto it before installing Tiramisu.

For reference, the device's model number is WDBYVG0010BBK-0B. It uses USB 3.0 (it has blue plastic in its USB plug).

Oddly enough, it works like a dream with my original Wii console. Just not with a Wii U.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here but afaik you can only backup your NAND directly to SD then if you want, you can copy that to your USB drive from a PC if you want for safe keeping.

That being said, if you plan on using the 1tb drive for WiiU games, inject etc it needs to be formatted on the WiiU itself which it should prompt you to do when the console fires on. YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING ON THAT DRIVE WHEN YOU FORMAT.

If it's not prompting you to format the drive at all, then its likely not getting enough power to spin up the drive. The WiiU USB ports are rather underpowered so you will most likely need a USB y cable or a drive that plugs into a wall outlet to get it to work with the WiiU properly. Hope this answers your question.

Yet another thing happened.

I did get the HDD to be recognized and used FTPiiU Everywhere to try and transfer a few files.

This program was just so genuinely shitty that it made it so every single file on my hard drive (except for a "wiiu" folder I made after the fact) is hidden and seemingly inaccessible. I know the files are still there. They are just hidden away.

Noticed this after plugging the hard drive into both my PCs.

67GB worth of save data and games for multiple consoles are seemingly gone after i just wanted to transfer a file on a damn Wii U. This shit is rigged

Are you sure it's not Ustealth? It's in fat32 format, so it's not formatted by the wiiu. I don't think ftpiiueverywhere works with a fat32 hdd anyway.

Does it ask to format when plugged into the wiiu?
It does.

For reference: 1. The screen goes dark while the blue USB icon on the bottom left of the screen is highlighted with a loading circle on top, before shortly bringing up the formatting prompt. 2. With mocha, it is recognized (it doesn't ask me to format), but the HBL screen is blank signaling there isn't anything on the drive.

You need to put hbl stuff on the sd card.
