Hey guys, I want to run Linux but I've read in a tutorial that it carries multiple risks of bricking the switch or its screen.
So how often does that happen realistically? Is it actually safe if I follow it step by step? Or can I still *uck up if I run some command that I am not supposed to?

Wait what? I’ve been in danger and didn’t know it?

Are you talking about the Switchroot Ubuntu version? I‘ve done it on my sd card and just recently installed it on my extended emmc and I’ve never had any issues. I don’t want to say it’s impossible without being educated, so where have you seen brick warnings? Links pls

No worries man. Good job oh the backup though. Whew! Just take it step by step. It will all come together in the end.
Yeah I don't think I'm going to go through it again I probably messed up somewhere while doing it, and I'ma have to go through the nxmanager process again which I do not want at all because it takes longer on windows parallels.(Then the 2 hours to send my SD content back onto the new card.
My modder basically explained to me that it was a copy paste to a new memory card when I got the switch back, which it was not(made me lose time doing this). So I got my save files through JKSV from before, and I think what' best now is to do a new emunand with my micro SD card and do a file based partition if I ever want to upgrade again or do back ups easier. I'll just reinstall everything lol.

This guide should be fine for my oled Switch right?

Also just before I do this, would Emutool be an option if I just have one SD card slot?

It's on a github tutorial referred to from a gbatemp tutorial cause it was outdated.
outdated tutorial link:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/quick-tuto-how-to-boot-linux-on-your-switch.501918

and the disclaimer in the pic below.

I was just wondering if there have been any reported issues using Linux or was it just the usual warning.

Could you also link me the tut you followed, kindly.
Thank you!

yeah…not just a copy paste with a partition based sd card. It’s probably worth going through it though, because it’s best practice to always have a good backup. You should use the Mariko version of SX/HWFLY.

I think every guide should come with that disclaimer. Everything you do that’s not “just playing games” has risk.

The guys over at Switchroot do a bang up job and are actively supporting it on their discord. It‘s integrated with the Hekate partition manager and everything. 😀

This is what I run on mine: https://wiki.switchroot.org/en/Linux/Ubuntu-Install-Guide

(they also have an Android install if you’re interested.)

e: switchroot currently only works on V1 Erista btw…

Try to use Emutool to convert to files (on your PC) and then convert from files back to partition based (you will need a partition available to do so.)

Hekate version is very similar…create files suitable for backup to PC and then restore to emunand.

Quick question, I've been using yuzu for a while now, but just set up ryujinx, since I've seen some titles preform better/differently on it.

I wanted to ask, would there be any conflicts if both emulators use the same rom folder? It does sound like a dumb question as a type it out, but just wanted to be sure. Disk space is also not an issue. I want just wondering, thanks.

No conflict at all. The ROMs (nsp and xci) are “read only” on both “machines”.

funny story:
i knocked over my switch like yesterday after not using it for a few days (i was just having it on the dock bc i was kinda sick of trying to search for things + there are absolutely no reliable repair places near me and i'm FAR too paranoid / anxious to trust anyone with expensive equipment).

I've had it on for hours and it hasn't crashed.
Of course if i say that and it crashes i won't be surprised, but given it rarely lasted more than 10 minutes in a game before crashing a few days ago, i think somehow, something fixed itself when i wasn't using itself for a few days, or when i knocked it over off the dock. one of those two things. I guess.
saves me money if that worked then

Exactly, as long as you haven't touched the internal memory, once you run out of space on the SD card, you can still use the internal memory as an installation destination.

Nintendo Accounts are rarely banned and when they are, its usually not because of hacking but due to other actions such as credit card fraud.

The "hack" was never installed in the first place so there is nothing to be deleted in the first place unless you delete the files from the SD card in which case they will just need to redownloaded from the Internet. I'm not sure what you mean by "ID" though or why you need it in the first place.

Although its incredibly hard to brick the Switch, you will most certainly run into trouble if you use the AIO Updater. Updating Atmosphere is literally as simple as downloading the new files and placing them on your SD card. For maximum efficiency, you can delete the /atmosphere folder on your SD card first to remove any old files and folders from earlier versions. Updating your firmware is done with the homebrew application, Daybreak, which comes bundled with Atmosphere automatically. However you must download the firmware you wish to update to separately and those are copyrighted files so you must find them yourself. Rest assured though that Nintendo Switch firmware files are readily available on the Internet if you look hard enough.
thank you! did that and updated atmosphere and the firmware thru daybreak. anything else i should do?

Is you sector in the right place?

Take a look at you emunand with Hekate and it will show you where it thinks everything is.
Where can I see that?
I clicked on emuMMC manage where it shows me emuMMC Info and selection
This is what I have
Type: SD Raw Partition

Sector: 0x00000002

Nintendo folder: Emutendo

All my files seem to be on RAW2 instead of RAW 1 as well
tried moving my RAW2 contents into the ER00 folder and configured the ini file and nope still no apps showing up. sigh

edit: I created a SD File through the emuMMC Creation tool which I guess erased my Raw2 contents which at this point i'm fine.
I got 389GB of free space showing through tinfoil so I guess i'm good. I'll use JKSV for my saves

Wherever Hekate says your files are is where you should move your files. Send a screenshot of your hekate screen and a co-y of the contents of your emummc.ini file and I can tell you where to put your content.

Do you have to update to the latest firm to play the newest games off line on a switch ?
No, not really. That’s actually the indicator for when you should upgrade (rather than right when an upgrade comes out and dealing with the bumps and bruises of bleeding edge.) It takes quite a while before a new firmware is mandatory for any sizable number of games. Most Dev houses want to be compatible with the largest user base on launch day so a few revs back is preferred.

http://nswdb.com/. <— check out required FW versions here.

Less than 50 games right now even require 13.x and none require 14.
