Thanks, will it even work on a different laptop? I don't know if drivers could cause a conflict.

It's often not advisable but I have done it in the past, although the windows license could cause problems.

Acronis (2019 in my case) does have an option called "universal restore" under the tools section:
https://kb.acronis.com/ati2019/aur

Never used it myself though.

Yes, it can, but as you said the drivers might be hit and miss. Luckily Windows 10 is pretty good at not BSODing like previous versions and if it is a bit older laptop it will probably have at least MS' version of drivers for the hardware. You will also need a new key if the laptop doesn't have a key saved in the BIOS for whichever version of Windows you have.

How do you set the new key or is that even possible? It's my understanding that the windows key is integrated with the mobo? With windows 10, do I need a set of new drivers or will it fix itself? Or is that a maybe?

When you enter in a new key it should store it.

It depends on how old the laptop is, but generally you will only need to find the right drivers for the GPU to be 100%.

So windows will say it's a preview or trial version while the key is wrong? Do I need to get that key from the old laptop? The laptop needs to be at least functional to get to that screen, correct?

Actually, I need to input the new key, right? So get to the desktop, open system information, copy the key, then save it somewhere safe?

You won't be able to use the same key as that on a different laptop unless it is a volume (multi-use/corporate) key. You can get a good key for cheap from various resellers online. Check reviews before you buy.

If you are also someone that can find yourself some trash computers around you a Windows 7 key can be used to activate 10 still. Just find a trash system with a 7 Key sticker and you are good to go. As long as the system you are pulling the key from is no longer being used that is..

okay, I got the new drive installed, and I flashed a disk image. it worked, but now there's about 500GB of unallocated space between two non-adjacent portions of the drive. I formatted the unallocated space, and I'm not sure how to extend the drives. I found an app that might work, but the problem is that bitlocker is encrypting the drive. how long does this usually take for a 1TB m2 ssd?

You'll need a freeware partition tool. I believe the free version of AOMEI Partition Assistant can append free space to existing partitions.
problem is they have to be congruent or nothing works. as a result, I had to delete my dell recovery partitions, just to get the C drive next to the unallocated space.

From command prompt run this command on the old laptop. It should show the key for windows 10.

wmic path softwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey

Run as admin? And I input that into the new laptop? I bet the next system will be on windows 11, so can I just use the windows 10 installer to downgrade?

It's possible that Windows may have tied the activation of that key to the windows account if any was used on the machine. If so the only way it will activate with that key on a new system is to use the same account on both systems as well. This may cause a conflict if the old system is also to remain operational. Also you may need to install an OEM version of windows 10 and then do the upgrade to 11 so the key/activation will migrate properly.

If the new system has 11 and you want to downgrade to 10 I assume you would just need to format the drive and reinstall 10 from scratch. It is possible the key that is store in the SLIC is also compatible with windows 10 if it's windows 11 but knowing MS it is not.
