Hello everyone!

So recently, whenever I'm playing a game on the 3DS, it crashes.
A few months ago, these crashes were rare and would resolve itself after I reinserted the SD card. The screens would turn black a few times, then never again for the rest of the day. Because of that, I didn't pay much attention to it.

Nowadays though, it crashes more and more often that I'm unable to start a game without worrying that it'll crash. The time it took for the screens to return to normal started becoming longer. After a while, Luma started displaying the ErrDisp error message every time the screens turned black. Just a few days ago, the screens turned black before Luma could display the ErrDisp error message properly and stayed black until I restarted the 3DS.

I talked to the person who sold me the 3DS (and SD card + adapter) about the issue, and they said that the problem was that my SD Card adapter was faulty and would need to be replaced. Their explanation was that the 3DS couldn't read and write onto the SD card properly due to the adapter (It still works with my laptop though). They also said that I would have to turn off the Wi-Fi switch every time I used the 3DS. I was confused as to why that was so and asked them about it, but they never gave a proper answer.

I'd just like a second opinion about this. Judging from what's happening, is it true that the problem lies with the SD card adapter and is it essential that the Wi-Fi switch needs to be turned off?

Your SD could be faulty. Do you have other cards you can check? You could use h2testw to test your card but I think you have to back up everything you have on your card before testing.

Your SD is likely faulty or something is corrupted on it, test your SD card using h2testw. if it returns with no errors, your SD card is fine and it's likely something with your 3DS. If not, if you have another card, backup everything on your SD card and use that one. If not just buy a new one.

Thank you for the help @pistonfish and @NintendoFanBoiYT !! ^_^

I'll try to test my SD card with h2testw later after I back up the contents. Unfortunately I don't have another SD card I can use, so I'll just buy another one or reformat my current one if ever it's corrupted!
Will update on the results soon...!

Huh, weird. The test says that there are no errors. I might have to try reformatting the SD card and test it again. I'll put the results here later...

Though if this is a problem with the 3DS and not the SD card... how would someone go about fixing it? :(

Did you do this test with the sd card Fully Empty? If not then you will need to do so again.

You want to do a Full Write and Read set of tests to fully verify a sd card.

The SD card might be faulty and it has corrupted some of the game files, which might be why this is happening. Try making a new folder on your computer, then copying all files and folders from the SD card, then format the card to FAT32, and then put all your files back on it. Also, what capacity is your card, and what type of card is it (SDHC, SDXC, etc.)?

Oh oops. In the first test, the SD card wasn't empty.
I did another test with the SD card fully empty though. It still showed the same results:

Yeah... I'm going to format the card to FAT32 next to be sure.

My card is an SDXC and has a capacity of 128 gb ^^;

Go for FAT32 with 64k clusters then. 64k clusters is best for 128 GB disks.

Alright, a little update:

I reformatted the card to FAT32 with an allocation size of 65536 and returned all the files.

When I first inserted the card into the 3DS, it couldn't read it. After another try, the card worked and I haven't gotten any errors or crashes so far.

I hope it doesn't crash again... but anyway, thanks to all the people who helped T.T

Why are you replying to months-old threads like this one...? And I haven't mentioned any emulation, either. Not sure what "emu" you're talking about.

Anyway, for those reading this hoping to get some closure: I found out that the problem was the lock on my SD card. Putting tape on it solved the problem temporarily, and eventually I bought another SD Card to stop the problem completely. Still, thanks again to those who helped.
