Stealth is "very unhappy with the state of Sonic Origins"

download (1).jpeg

When a team of developers launch their game, it can be a happy moment, one of excitement and anticipation as all that effort and hard work have resulted in a completed product that fans can enjoy. That's true to a degree when it comes to the recently launched Sonic Origins, but there's been some problems as well. Stealth, who is renowned and beloved for his projects and work within the Sonic community, and who is part of the team that helped get Sonic 3 & Knuckles finally released on modern platforms, is not pleased with the end result. Those intricately familiar with Sonic 3 were quick to point out issues and flaws with dev Headcannon's port of the game into the Retro Engine, critisizing them for not having fixed physics and hitbox problems before the game's release.

However, Stealth took to Twitter to let out a long string of Tweets that better explain the situation in its entirety: according to him, Sonic Origins isn't "what [they] turned in" to SEGA, and a lot of bugs and problems that players are having were instead introduced on SEGA's end of things. Stealth mentions how he and Headcannon did all they could so that Origins could be as good as they could make it be, suffering development crunch and stress over getting everything done in time. Some things, he notes as being bugs that Headcannon had to overlook due to the high pressure development, but not all of them are his team's fault. Just ahead of Sonic Origins' launch, the team tried to push some fixes out, but those reportedly weren't allowed due to submission and approval rules, and delaying the game at all just wasn't an option for SEGA. Headcannon has also apparently offered to iron out the bugs and keep working on making Origins better post-release, but the team isn't sure if SEGA will allow that to happen.

Not all is negative, though--Stealth wanted to make sure to mention he's still on good terms with SEGA, and appreciated the opportunity and said that most of SEGA's staff was kind and respectful, just that he wanted to clear the air so fans better knew what went on behind closed doors.

Yup. As expected. The moment SEGA announced that all previous rereleases were to be delisted, it was a sign that they were going to screw Origins up.

It shows that whenever a company does something like that to older releases of a game (or games), it’s a known tactic to sell a worse version because they know people would buy the older, superior versions instead.

@shaunj66 Welp, there you go. That's why Sonic 3 is so bad. This guy has explained it all. So, as I pointed out before, it's still SEGA's fault. This wouldn't be the first time SEGA has messed up on something that could turn out wonderful, and it certainly won't be the last.

Even so, you gotta respect SEGA for still hanging in there, after nearly facing bankruptcy more than once over the past couple of decades.

Transparency is needed
Yeah honesty is always refreshing in this kind of situation, at least as a consumer it is. This probably is bad for business and therefore an inappropriate thing to do in regard to his job and keeping a good relationship with Sega. Having said that, I appreciate it all the more that he probably knew exactly that yet still felt so strongly about this that he did tell the public. That takes some real balls, I have nothing but respect for that. Hopefully Sega allow them to issue the fixes they wanted to, and newly introduced fixes that he probably could easily tackle via patch.

I like how people talk shit about SEGA and act like they're better than them (which you're not). Maybe someday people will stop being judgemental just to boost their ego.
So guess you're also saying you're worse than Sega.
Sonic Frontiers doesn't need a delay.
I agree, it's probably gonna be bad anyway, so why delay it :V

I don’t worship developers, and I’m not “trying to discredit” anyone. I don’t know how you gathered that from what was said. He’s simply behaving in a way a contractor shouldn’t.
if this was a dev that's infamous for lying or making excuses i'd agree but there's no evidence to assume Stealth is "that" kind of developer, it's common sense that Sega is at fault here given their history of rushing sonic games and crunching devs to meet deadlines

Cause at the end of the day, the publisher always gets the final say in how a product turns out and thus should be held accountable, how that information is known to the public is meaningless when it's vital for consumers to make an informed decision

idk about this with the sucky sonic games that have come out before this. this just seems like he's trying to follow a trend even though he made the game. i havent played it or read about it but who exactly fault is it that this guy made a game that sucked? then apparently turned in his knowingly broken game and said SEGA made it even worse. If you cant make video games pal, and a game that already existed 30 years ago at that maybe youre the one who sucks at making video games. stupid game developers and their dumb social media access

Oh boi is sonic 06 all over again and if sega didn't care for a classic games compilation i don't have any hope for frontiers since they already confirmed "NO DELAYS"

Man just sell sonic to someone else

This may seem petty. But I got the game on Switch, (via of course legitimate ways, of course :P). The game just feels, off, I dunno how to explain it. And once I heard the new Ice Cap song, I closed the game and uninstalled it.

Enjoy the new songs for your self.

It's sad that kids playing Sonic 3 for the first time, have to hear these god awful songs. Even beyond the grave, Michael Jackson is finding ways to fuck over kids.

That’s nice. In the real world most companies have social media policies precisely for this reason, and it would be grounds for immediate termination if Stealth was a SEGA employee rather than an independent contractor. There’s such a thing as being “too honest” - you don’t throw people under the bus for the online mob to feast on, you wait until the situation develops further. He’s made it more difficult for the PR team to mop up the issue, and that costs money. The whole thing could’ve been nipped in the bud in a week’s time via patches without the drama, now the drama stays online forever. It will be reflected in Headcannon’s future contracts going forward, it’s an important factor. He’s doing himself damage by not being able to keep his cool, it’s bad for business, not just for SEGA but more so for himself.

Oh yeah, just a heads up.

If you have Sonic Origins on Steam/Epic, you're in luck. Members of the modding communities are going all out at making sure it'll be on a better state.
So far, there are a few music mods for S3&K which either restore the MJ tracks, use the remastered AIR tracks, or use the proper prototype tracks.
There's also a pixel shader mod that eliminates the blur issue with all the games.
It's only a matter of time until most bugs will be fixed, if at all, but at least there are workarounds cooking in the oven.
Hopefully mods will be available on Switch as well, since all games are running on the Retro Engine.

Just replying to the modding part but I hear most mods work on Switch (obviously needing Atmosphere though)

I'm not even surprised in the slightest. I expected this game to be a flop since they announced all the malpractices they were employing.

- Day 1 DLC
- Terrible pre-order DLC chart
- High price tag
- No regional pricing
- Denuvo
- Delisting original games

And all this before the game even came out. Yet even on this site, people defended the game for some reason. Now it's out and Sealth of all people is calling the game out. Filled with bugs and problems on top of all these malpractices. And guess what: you can't even go and buy the originals anymore, unless you're on switch or mobile.

I hate to say "I told you so", but...

Do you want Sega to make good quality games or not. How bout you stfu and stop complaining about mundane shit.

1) Doesn't matter, it will be cracked just like every other Failnuvo title.
2) Doesn't matter, more on that below.
3) Also won't matter, for the same reason as below.
4-7) Still doesn't matter, for the reason that will be listed clearly following this line.

The chances are the majority of those complaining weren't going to buy this and they will end up torrenting or downloading it from Fitgirl just like any other repacked Failnuvo title. The older titles should be expected to show up on GOG in a few months anyway just like any other delisted or unpopular Steam game.

Complaining about games being delisted on Steam is pointless, there's no way anyone was on the fence about buying the older Sonic 123 or CD titles. Anyone that wanted them already has them and anyone that doesn't probably wasn't interested in them to begin with.

TLDR: Getting that worked up over a game you weren't going to buy doesn't make much sense. This release is for Gen Z/Alpha gamers that might not know anything about classic Sonic, not nostalgic Gen X/Xennials/Millennials that have already had the chance and played these to death.

Completely irrelevant. Your argument boils down to whatever opinion it is that you are parroting after reading it online and you can't even get that right. No one cares if you own the previous Steam versions. No one cares about your perceived intrinsic value of these games. You might not have heard this before, but the world does not revolve around you and your needs.

In the 90s these games were $59.00 MSRP each for Sonic 1 and 2. CD was $49.00 MSRP. Sonic 3 and the Knuckles lock-on cart were $69.00 MSRP each. Stores were then free to charge a markup on top of that. Adjusted for inflation that's over $600 today. The only other time a native port of Sonic 1-3+K has been released was Sonic Jam for the Sega Saturn. That compilation featured Sonic World as its bonus, was also $49.99, and didn't even include Sonic CD. This collection costs $49.99 with extras, it's a steal compared to the total we had to pay for these games back in the 90s.

If you choose to play on an open gaming platform that requires anti-piracy software to run in the background that's your fault for choosing to play on that platform. Either buy a dedicated gaming system and don't play on PC or give up gaming entirely. Regardless of which you choose, no one here on gbatemp should have to read your pointless Denuvo rants in a Mega Drive Mini 2 thread.
These sure aged poorly LOL

I really hope the game can be fixed, because Stealth and his team do NOT deserve this outcome.

Sega is about to learn first-hand what Nintendo learned fifteen years ago: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."

this is like going to a local bar, buying some drinks and enjoying watching a cover band play your faves but then turning around after the fact and saying the band did a horrible job because they are emulating the original and not the band that created the song.

its fine for what it is - what the hell is so egregious about this game that people need to complain this bad? you get your moneys worth.

Once again - I would love to hear what these bugs and glitches are from people that have replied in this topic. I've played all the games all the way through in Origins and didn't come across any that weren't in the original game. If you're all adamant about complaining, showcase these gameplay issues you are personally taking issue with.
