AYN teases handheld gaming PC AYN Loki, "the most affordable Windows handheld"

ayn loki.JPG

In a video aired today, gaming handheld manufacturer AYN has teased their upcoming product: the AYN Loki:

While not much is known about the device at this time, AYN is touting it as the "the most affordable Windows handheld ever created". The company previously released the AYN Odin, a Snapdragon 845-equipped handheld gaming device, running on Android 10 and retailed on crowdfunding platforms for $200 and currently sells for $239. However, the pricing for the AYN Loki remains to be confirmed.

With the newly announced Loki device, AYN joins a growing number of handheld manufacturers launching Windows handhelds of their own such as Anbernic and AYANEO. If the pricing is indeed leaning towards the affordable side, the Loki could open up the world of handheld gaming PCs to a new audience.

Still not seeing anything...

I also wonder what is meant by "affordable". Compared to the AYA lineup, $600 is affordable. With that in mind, the Steam Deck is dirt cheap in comparison. So, what exactly is affordable??

They say "most affordable Windows handheld ever" and they themselves are selling one for 240 bucks. That means we can assume it's less than that. So comparing it to a $600+ unit is kind of silly.

Not sure why they'd bother sticking with Windows, that's always gonna add $100 to the price, not to mention give you an inferior experience on a portable. Nice that these companies are filling in the cheaper pricing tiers for portable PCs, but it's gonna take a bigger player like ASUS to actually hit that same price-to-performance sweet spot that Valve did with Steam Deck.
It's kinda hard to say if windows does costs a 100 bucks for OEM manufacturers

I've been keeping an eye on the x86 mini computers, HDMI sticks and so on for a while, most of them obscure Chinese stuff, and when a device comes in two versions, Linux and Windows, the Windows version is usually $100 more than the Linux version. I guess it depends on the deal they have with Microsoft, and the smaller manufacturers didn't have a favourable one, if at all. And since Ayn is still technically a small obscure manufacturer, who knows.

If they're going the Windows ARM route, that might be different.

You made a compelling point actually ,guess we'll just have to see the final product with it's full specs if it's worth

Call me the black sheep but I don't see how any of these "gaming handhelds" are truly needed. If I
m spending $600-$800 on a device that wouldn't have a lifespan of 3+ years.

Nowadays you have too much remote play and gamestreaming to play AAA games on the go and almost any android phone and even Iphone (jailbroken) can handle retro games up to 3DS.

If anything I'm saying make sense these gaming handhelds are like a lamborghini in your pocket. Fancy but not needed. Maybe I'm talking like this because I have 2 gaming laptops and 6 switches idk

Affordable aka hardware equivalent to that of the switch, so rather pointless if your looking to run any of todays games unless its settings are low-medium.

Why bother, if your going to get a portable Windows gaming device then you might as well make sure its capable of running today games and have the specs to run at least some future games.

Don't do a nintendo and just release cheap crap, because your only going to lack the current games and end up having to buy a new system just to play them, and by then those games are old and your then not going to get those current new games of that time.

Windows is still the prime location for the indie scene, a small, low-powered device that can run those games definitely has a niche.

People posting how they dump hours on Vampire Survivor on their Decks and it's a bit of a waste.

Ooookay, details are leaking already:

According to one post, screenshotted by YouTuber Taki Udon and posted to a Discord server, here are the Chinese and international retail prices for the AYN Loki:

ModelProcessorStoragePrice
Loki miniIntel Alder Lake64GB2,014 CNY / $299
LokiAMD Zen 3+ / RDNA 2 GPU64GB3,360 CNY / $499

So the cheapest one is $300 which is... something.

Oh well. Let's see how this goes.

Damn, they're pretty competitive with those lower end models!

I have an aya neo now and whilst I didn't think I needed one before I got it. Now I wouldn't be without it.

As an all singing and all dancing emulation machine on the go there is nothing close to it.

Whilst the aya neo is a touch on the pricey side, more devices means more competition which means lower prices for us consumers. I think I'll pick one of these up day one provided they don't make the same mistake they made with the odin and not have a 60hz screen as a minimum. Which...ya know, is criminal in this day and age.
