Musician you discovered/became a fan of due to their music featuring in a game

...and I'm specifically talking about pre-existing music that was licensed for inclusion in a game, not music written/scored/composed for a game (that's a whole different topic).

I've discovered a few artists via their inclusion in game soundtracks, but after having Sleigh Bells on in my car yesterday and realising that I discovered them via the Lolipop Chainsaw soundtrack a decade ago, I figured I'd ask what artists you've discovered and become a fan of due to their tracks being licensed to a game.

My answer will be far from unique I'm sure, but Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1&2. I still listen to their soundtrack sometimes, and in specific those games introduced me to Powerman 5000, Primus, The Dead Kennedys, and Reel Big Fish. Other great bands that I already loved on the soundtrack are Rage Against the Machine and Sublime.

The original composer that got me into VGM was Nobuo Uematsu with the SNES Final Fantasies, but when I heard Motoi Sakuraba's work in Star Ocean The Second Story it really reignited my passion for VGM and he's more or less been my favorite musician ever since.

Literally NOT what my OP was asking... it specifies existing music licensed for use in a game, NOT compositions created for a game.

Not that I ever played Halo. I think that's where they really took off, though, with Diary of Jane, I believe it was.

WAY back in the day right after that ATRAC editor got released, I had created a THUG 2 Remix ISO for PSP that had all the original tracks ripped out and replaced with nothing but Sublime. Even uploaded it to a torrent site and had a few thousand downloads from other users. I can't find it anymore, but it was THUG 2 Remix - The Sublime Dub.

I dd one for Fight Night Round 3 as well, and that was the FNR3 Eminem Remix. Nothing but Eminem, Snoop, Dre, etc.

Took hours and hours. Worth it.

Let's see...

To of the charts: Michiel Van Den Bosch, for his amazing work on the first unreal. Atmospheric, moody, a hint of danger but mostly conjures adventure/exploring.

Tony Hawk... Yeah, guilty. Mostly bad religion(you) and - of course - mötorhead (Ave of spades).

The other main culprit is, of course, guitar hero and rock band. GH2 had the best track list of what i knew, but rock band 1 probably had the most 'i didnt know this existed

Edit: forgot a couple good ones:

Rob Zombie: his work is actually different from his tracks in iirc quake 2,but it's actually much better. Not really my genre, but i know quality when i hear it

GTA: vice city. I can't say i discovered much specifically, but vrock was just a great radio station. Among with iirc VCPR (vice city public radio), but that weren't songs.
It must be the time period, because later gta's never hooked me to the point that i just drove around, not wanting to leave the car because the radio was so good

NFS Underground 2 is where i became a fan of The Doors, it has a remix of "Riders on the Storm" with Snoop Dogg singing the verses, and Jim doing the chorus, i really liked it back then. And even after i heard the original (which is a classic), the remix still holds up pretty well..

And GTA San Andreas of course, where do i begin with this one, it has everything from rock, reggae, classic hip-hop, metal, country.. you name it. and it's properly my fav soundtrack in any game ever..

The WWE SvR games had some pretty banging soundtrack too, from '06 till '10, then they switched to theme songs.. Not quite GTA level but still they have special place in my heart..

There was some artists that i was familiar with, like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, but certainly not the others, it opened my eye for that generation of music (late 30's 'till late 40's).. I appreciate that kind of music a lot!
There's just a strange connection between what was going on the real world during that time period (WWII and all) and the setting of Fallout 3, that just works..

Yeah, same for me. Fallout 3 has a great soundtrack - I have the 3 CD edition of the soundtrack.
