Sony announces some current and classic games coming to PS Plus revamp in June

Sony has finally given us a detailed list of the games that will be available on its revamped PlayStation Plus service that it announced back in March. As promised back then, there are a number of PS1, PS2 and PSP games available for download, as well as PS3 games available to stream with PS4 and PS5 games available for either option (though streaming is not supported in all regions).

Note that Sony says these are "some" of the games that will be available in the "launch time frame" for the new PS Plus. While they don't specify exactly what they consider the launch time frame, it's worth noting that it will not rollout worldwide at the same time. The service will launch in Asia on May 24, in Japan on June 2, North and South American on June 13 and Europe, Australia and New Zealand on June 23, so it's possible that not all of these will be available at launch, especially if it debuts earlier in your region. The blog also stipulates that not all games will be available in all regions, and that streaming may not be available immediately for certain titles, but downloads will be.

It appears as if Sony will honour digital purchases made during the PS3/PS Vita era - for some titles anyway. Since PS1 games could be purchased digitally on the PS3 and Vita, and PSP games could also be purchased digitally on the Vita, anyone who has purchased "select" titles in the past will not have to make a separate purchase or sign up to PS Plus to access them (though it appears as though they will only be available for download, not streaming). Some PS1 and PSP titles will also let you save your game at anytime, have improved resolution, higher framerates, and will include a rewind function.

For those that need a quick refresher, the new PS Plus service will have three tiers; Essential, Extra, and Premium. Essential will give users what PS Plus does right now: access to online multiplayer, occasional discounts on the PS Store, and a handful of monthly games to download. Extra adds in part of what PS Now offers right now, with some PS4 and PS5 games being available to download or stream. Premium will let players access a library of classic PlayStation titles from the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP. All of these can be downloaded or streamed, with the exception of the PS3 titles, which can only be streamed. In areas where streaming is not an option, Premium is replaced with the slightly-cheaper Deluxe tier to account for the lack of streaming. (Sony has not mentioned whether the Deluxe tier will be available in regions where streaming is an option for users who aren't interested in streaming.) Sony says the list of available games on the Deluxe and Premium tiers will refresh in the middle of every month.

Wow. After not subscribing for almost five years, this might actually be a reason to come back.

If only I didn't already own most of these.

The list states the games available at launch. Then they'll release others.

The source article states the following:

"we are pleased to share with you an early look at some of the games that will be included during the launch time frame"

"Please note titles may vary by local market"

"I’m pleased to share a selection of the content that will be available for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium/Deluxe plans. PlayStation.com will be updated with the game list when it launches in your region."

"Below is an early look at a selection of games that will be available."

Imo that says those are not complete launch lists, but that the full lists will be available at launch.

Could somebody explain to me how the higher tiers work, please?

Is it like the essentials tier, where you buy the game for free and have it in your library forever (as long as the subscription lasts) and after a month other games become available while the older ones vanish?

Or is it like a game pass, were these games are always available and the library is growing every month?

I read the news and the official sources but they do not provide a concrete answer...

All of the new tiers give you the "free" games to claim every month that you "keep" until your subscription expires. If you re-subscribe you gain back access to any previous games you claimed. The higher tiers give you access to more classics as outlined in the article and source.

Game Pass games are not always available. Games get removed and replaced. I assume the new PS+ tiers will be similar.

Imo the news and sources are very clear, but I hope that helps

@Stone_Wings "launch time frame" isn't the same as "launch", I think. Could be wrong, but it could mean that they'll release more games in the following weeks/months.

I believe these are not complete launch OR launch time frame lists and that they are also adding more as time goes on. I could very well be wrong too. That's just how I interpret it. :)

PS3 games say they're only available for streaming, but I read they can be downloaded?

Either way, I'd rather just boot up my PS3 and play the game I want than Sony's selection.

Where did you hear that? I haven't seen anything about it and it's been a big point of contention for people. I think the only place you've been able to download PS3 games were on a PS3 itself.

Maybe it was for streaming on PC? I can't really remember when or where.

Hehe... Nintendo-like blocking game DEMOS behind a pay wall!

Gaming surely has evolved.
To hell with the new systems. With the new policies. With the new ways to make people pay even more, for almost nothing.

Well, gaming for me ended basically after PS2/Wii/XBOX.

So long, Sony bozos!

Me too, for the most part, besides Nintendo. Once the consoles starting using their online focus and becoming media players, I lost interest. Most of the games are just kind of "meh" now too. Take a look at the eShop sometime, and you'll find it's 80% indie crapware.

Yes, lowest tier is the same as current psn plus.
Good, I think that's all I need. There's no games on PS5 that are a must-have for me, so I'm sticking with my PS4 Pro for as long as I can.

So they can convert ps3 games to run on ps5, why not just let us play our ps3 discs rather than force us to buy into this digital subscription shit or rebuy the shit we already own...... fuck me I thought you was called Sony not Nintendo.

I think even letting us use our disc games while the subscription was active would be fair.

One thing that chaps my ass about Sony, is I own the disc for Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. (Possibly the best golf game ever made, period.)

And they offer it digitally as a PS3 game on PS Now. But using my disc, the game won't work. Fuck me for buying physical games, right? This is why emulators are essential.

Sorta like Xbox does? Nah, it's Sony.

They didn't let us play our PS2 game discs back on the PS3 days (it'd download a PS2 Classics version if it existed), so I don't expect it now.

This is gaming as a service by all accounts.

Don't be silly, you'll give them ideas.

If you own it, you own it. You shouldn't have to pay to play it.

Thats whats wrong with gaming today, devs too, they know people will just accept it and it was only last gen when gamers rightfully kicked off over the anti pre owned idea.

But they all soak up in this digital shit that now allows the likes of microsoft to buy out major gaming studios to make its games exclusive to its digital only service.

Then they do this because gamers like clueless sheep all think, lets save money buying a console and go for the digital only.

They'll use this increase in digital only unit sales as an excuse to push consoles to digital only.

Now you all just fed into their hands as they have now effectively prevented the use and sale of pre owned games.

And the only purpose behind this is so they maximise on profits and no one else.

Kiss goodbye to the already suffering gaming stores, they want the gaming industry to be the next Netflix when it crushed blockbusters and other rental stores.

Sod that, digital you own fuck all, we already see the likes of craptivision pushing its turd games as digital only, they charge you full price for a disc that doesn't even contain the game, but some bullcrap online multiplayer shit game and your forced with a day one update then forced to download the actual game you purchased in parts.

Welcome 20-30 years, do you honestly think craptivision aren't going to pull it to cut its costs.

Also, kiss goodbye to having a gaming collection that you could sell with your console, all that digital shit will have to be wiped clean when you have to reset the console.

So whats the going rate for a last gen console.... peanuts.

Or

If you are a collector, kiss that goodbye, no more collecting games and watch them increase in value over the years.
