Same here. It works flawlessley with other channels such as Wiimc, Usb Loader gx, Wiiflow or Cfg loader gx but the picking the HC always ends up in a reboot. I've run a syscheck in my vwii and it says the homebrew channel is not install at all (absurd I know).

I've run out of ideas to make it work

Are you positive you're using the correct title id? You can use USB Loader GX to view "System Channels" to make sure what the correct title id is.

I shall double-check later. However, I believe it must be LULZ for the Homebrew Channel
By the way, I didn't know about that way of checking title ids in wii/wii u. I've always use ShowMiiWads and the GameTDB to check.

See if OHBC=Homebrew Channel in the config file works. If not, this is what I have on mine and it works from the channel and also from the Haxchi boot menu.

hbl2hbc v1.1:
https://github.com/FIX94/hbl2hbc/releases
(hbl2hbc.txt file has OHBC=Homebrew Channel)

Homebrew Launcher 1.5 (sd:\wiiu\apps\homebrew_launcher\):
https://github.com/dimok789/homebrew_launcher/releases

Homebrew Launcher Channel 2.1 (Read the post, then download the hotfix update hblout.zip file):
https://github.com/dimok789/homebrew_launcher/issues/28#issuecomment-315604361

Open Homebrew Channel v1.1.4-1 (on vWii):
https://github.com/FIX94/hbc/releases

Also, don't forget about this hbl2hbc channel forwarder:

Is it possible to edit the .txt file and boot hbl2hbc at 4:3 as well? I installed some neogeo wads on the vwii, and it only stays in full screen with the console set to 4:3.
