Dokapon UP! Mugen No Roulette English Translation Release

Hello everyone! I'm happy to announce the Dokapon UP! Mugen No Roulette translation is in a releasable state! After six months of work, the game is (pretty much) fully translated! What I thought would take no more than a week by myself, ended up being a large project that had the help of many people. The translation is still being updated and improved, but the majority of the game is translated minus some text and images.

Download

You can download a copy of the most recent version as of 2022-3-3 here and join the Dokapon Discord server here in the channel #dokapon-translation-efforts to get continual updates to the translation (once every 6 hours). If you'd like to improve the translation, you can also join the Discord server to get involved. I'd like to just have one MEGA link that points to the most recent version in the future, but currently, that is not the case.

You can legally purchase the game by creating a Japanese Nintendo account and using gift cards to purchase it.

Usage

This mod REQUIRES VERSION 1.0.3 currently and will be updated to the most recent version sometime in the future. Probably after all the kinks have been worked out with this version.

The mod itself is a LayeredFS patch and can be installed on a homebrewed Switch or on Yuzu Emulator. On a homebrewed switch, extract the contents of the zip and copy the files from INSIDE OF English Mod/ to SDMC://atmosphere/contents/010048100D51A000 (or wherever your LayeredFS is). Also, make sure that the game is on version 1.0.3 (updating or downgrading as needed). On Yuzu, once you have the game and update installed, right-click on the game to open the mod folder. From there, extract the zip file into the mod folder (including the folder English Mod).

Also, in theory, you should be able to do online multiplayer. But I haven't tested it nor would I recommend it.

Yuzu Workarounds

On Yuzu, there is currently a glitch where the submenus in the main menu won't display properly. Here are the instructions on how to start a game blind:

Local Multiplayer: See the pinned message in #dokapon-translation-efforts in the Discord server. Too many options to put them all here.
Story:
  1. Select the first menu entry
  2. If this is the first time opening, there might be a tutorial menu that opens, if that is the case, press "B" once
  3. Press "A"
  4. Press "A" again to confirm save
Technical Details:

On the more technical side, the game is a Unity game, and in it were some files in a few asset bundles that needed to be extracted, modified, and repacked. Some of the text was in JSON, which was easy to modify. After that, it was figuring out what broke the game when translated and then not translating that. From there, it was modifying the UI, which meant modifying a large number of textures and repackaging them. The story text turned out to be the hardest, just because I couldn't figure out how it was saved. Turns out, it used MessagePack (pretty much serialized JSON), and with that, all of the text could be modified. Finally, a bunch of scripts, custom programs, and Google Sheets make the whole translation come together. Lots of bumps along the way, but it's finally finished.

Credits

I did not translate this game alone (in fact I know no Japanese lol), so I'd like to thank everyone who's contributed to the project, specifically:
  • DADDY for automating/simplifying the translation process, investigating bugs, getting additional people involved, and actually motivating me to finish the translation.
  • shorty_bobbert for helping create the initial proof-of-concept translation and for translating many of the images.
  • Metakite1 for manually translating the images and the majority of the text assets (without her the text would be Google Translate garbage).
  • nesrak1 for help writing software to edit the game files.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you and whoever has worked on the translation project so far. I have wanted to enjoy the game ever since I found out about there being a Dokapon game for Switch. I was sad that it was a Japanese-only game( most likely due to it's crossover nature ), and this has given me the chance to enjoy it now. I loved Dokapon Kingdom on the Wii, and I've played with a few friends on Dokapon Journey, but now we can once again start a new adventure.

Thank you and everyone involved in this project. I had completed Mask of Truth last week and still hunger for more Utawarerumono games. Sadly Zan game aren't on Switch but at least this game is enjoyable and fun.

I didn't even know this game existed! My brother and friends played the heck out of Dokapon Kingdom back in the day. Will definitely try this out. Thanks!

i first played this game on the nintendo ds - liked it a bit buut i gave up on it until i replayed it again -on and off, but after giving it a break long one i was gonna replay it once again but i found out that they made a switch version; that's when i had to play this one but course language blockage - i didn't really expect anyone to translate this game, so thank you <3

Wow this is amazing. I tried the game quite a long time ago. But couldn't convince my parter to play it since it's not in English.

Will try out later! Thanks!

the channel for the discord no longer exist so I can't play with friends
Yeah, haven't been active there and I didn't know the channel got deleted lol. I've gone ahead and compiled the final version to download here and updated the original post to link to it.

There's not really any more progress being made on the translation, so this one is the last one for the time being. I might come back to it to update it to work with 1.0.4 at a later time, though.

Didn't know this existed till now. Thanks for this. I'm surprised it wasn't picked up for an official release given how Dokapon games have been localised in the post. Will have to give this a go at some point.

I got a question.
Because you put the patch in atmosphere, is this the same if you have a custom themes installed? What i mean is when i update to a new version of atmophere , did i need to delete like on custom themes because otherwise it will fail to boot into atmophere?
