-Using emuMMC split partition SD card, OFW on one and CFW on the other.
-Updated OFW, then updated atmosphere and sigpatches no problem. Running current version of both.

Trying to open awoo to install and XCI file. This program doesn't work well in applet mode version of HBMenu, and I usually hold R while opening the gallery to circumvent this.
Only issue is that now holidng R on the gallery actually opens the gallery. Can only open HBMenu in applet mode.

Searched around for similar topics both on here and Reddit and didn't find any.
Thanks in advance for any help/insight.

I forget which one it is, but you can try to hold R while trying to launch another game to open the HBmenu or just open the gallery normally and it'll open HBmenu but I think that would still be in applet mode.

Not really sure what you mean.

Before today, I'd hold R while selecting the gallery to open HBMenu in full mode (not sure of the exact term, non-applet mode).
Now holding R while opening the gallery, opens the actual gallery - rather than any instance of HBMenu.

It's as though the key commands have changed, or maybe the hbmenu.nro is borked somehow.

(On a side note it's actually funny to see my gallery open now, rather than the menu I've grown accustomed to.)

to make holding R open the gallery you would have to use something like Hekate toolbox to set that it has never been set to that by default

That is how you run homebrew in applet mode. If you want to run homebrew in game mode, you have to hold R while launching a game. The gallery is an applet.
