Really don't have any knowledge about PS3 hacks.
The slim model looks good to me and I would like to use it for my old PS1 games and maybe some homebrew if I find something that interests me.
I know that on the PS2 you can load your games from a network storage. Since that is much faster than CD/DVD or HDD I would much rather use such a way to play my games as it also prevents degradation on the reader and disks.
There are some games I want to get and play before prices start to rise, so I thought I would start now.

Is it possible to backup my PS1 games to and play them from network storage on the PS3 (slim)?
Is there anything like dying capacitors like on the really old consoles I have to watch out for? Anything else?

uh?

AFAIK, network is not faster than reading from internal hard drive.

¿hard drive degradation?
At least for PS3, ¿who cares? It's a cheap common component...

Sure, but it is convenient to load from network, where storage space is not a problem (NAS) instead of using a bigger SSD in the PS3 itself. I would argue that a data loss is less likely on a NAS, too.
hard drive degradation
HDD degradation is irrelevant, correct. The BD drive is what I'm concerned about.
Yes those consoles are readily available now, but that will change with time.

I don't see how it is more convenient to load from network instead of locally.
With a big enough drive, you don't have storage space problem.
I don't see data loss as a problem for a gaming console, what is there to lose?
(saves should be backed anyway if those are important)
There's no gain for using an SSD instead of an HDD also.
I wasn't talking about BD degradation, I was only comparing local HDD storage with network storage.
And I wasn't talking about the console degradation, I was talking only about HDD degradation (who cares about this one).

Of course, for PS2 network load is a no go, loading speeds are very low conpared with local storage (although compatible HDD availability for the official PS2 network adapter isn't great currently).

Hi! Normally all PS3s are able to play PS1 games from disc without the need of any modification. Now if you want to play some games digitally, say like the "PS1 Classics" program (emulation from Sony) on PS3, there's a list of games that are available, but if it's not i don't think you can run the game as easily.
I know that on the PS2 you can load your games from a network storage. Since that is much faster than CD/DVD or HDD
SMB is not faster than internal HDD, its quite the opposite. Now there's POPStarter PS1 emulator that can play some games, but there's compatibility list you should look up if the game you want to play is compact or not. And you need FreeMCBoot installed on a PS2 Memory Card and a internal HDD hooked to SATA adapter (either OEM or the Game Star one).
Is it possible to backup my PS1 games to and play them from network storage on the PS3 (slim)?
Why? PS3 Internal storage works well and is superior to that, without counting the hoops you need to get through in order to get it going, all for no benefit IMO.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I was thinking you couldn't play PS2 from anything but internal so not only you couldn't use network but you can't even play them from external hdd. Unless something changed.

Hi, thanks for all the information.

Oh, I thought since the PS3 had a 1GBit Port it could use the full bandwith to load stuff from the network.
Why? PS3 Internal storage works well and is superior to that
Hm, that might just be my preference. A 1GBit Port would theoretically allow faster transfer speeds than an old HDD. If I switch to an SSD that would indeed not be an advantage anymore.
Is there an internal limit as to how fast a PS3 can read from an SSD, as it was designed to work with an HDD (not related to the opening questions, just curious)?
I was thinking you couldn't play PS2 from anything but internal
That would kill my hopes :D
I guess it all depends on how much control the exploit has and what it can make the system do.

Yeah you can only load PS1 or PS3 games from network. PS2 is internal only. I backup all of my PS2 games on an external though just in case something happened to the internal, but I can't use the ones on external.

Even hackers were never able to make it where you can play PS2 games from anywhere but internal unfortunately.

Indeed, an SSD would be bottlenecked by the system, so not much benefit in putting one just to shave off a few seconds (in boot time, loadings etc),totally not worth it.
As for using the ethernet port for faster speeds, i would assume it would be just an inconvenience to set up and with most likely no benefit.. though i have no experience so i can't help you there. All up to you.

afaik, you can load from network using OPL, but the speed is not better than using internal drive.
I see no use for it if you can use the internal drive to load the games.
