I was wondering if there was any homebrew out there for the Wii that would let me map my disk drive to the network to use it on my computer for backing up a couple disks?

If you have a old wii that is capable of reading backup disks, wiixplorer may work for you, but not to copy from disk to network, to copy from disk to sd or usb
Are you talking about backing up Wii game discs or generic discs (e.g. Iso 9660)?
If it’s just Wii software I know there is something available which uses the web browser, which I’ve used myself but can’t recall the name of, but I wouldn’t recommend it as there’s no checksum verification.

But honestly I would prefer CleanRip for dumping games to SD or USB.

For the purpose of backing up arbitrary DVDs (non Wii/GC discs): If you don't have any optical drive in the house, please order an external DVD±RW drive. They are dirt cheap and it will work much faster, much more reliably and can read (and write!) CDs as well (Wii can't).
Reading DVD±R with a Wii can cause major frustration and DVD±RW may even be impossible (depending on your Wii drive – they are picky).

Anyway, I have to test this: No idea what is going to happen:
I inserted a pressed Windows 7 Ultimate installation DVD into the Wii and lied to the dumping program saying it is a Wii DVD. It mounted the disc (without name) and offers downloading ".iso" . But it says the file has the full 4.3GB (like a Wii disc with padding). This will take forever; even with wired (Ethernet) connection the dumping process is slow as a snail (about 435KB/s). Is this going to be a functional Windows iso or will it crash once it reaches the end of data on the disc (about 3GB)??

Maybe ftpIi is an option. Will try that as well later. Copied 800MB at the moment.
WiiXplorer-SS should have an ftp server as well (but my WiiXplorer crashed when trying to open the Windows DVD)

The file loaded while I was away from home with the full 4.3GB which doesn't make sense (maybe it is padded with zeroes), but it can be mounted with
mount -o loop win7.iso /mnt
I didn't try if that iso image really works for installing Windows. If so, the truncate command should be able to trim it. I will continue tomorrow with testing ftpii and WiiXplorer-SS.

Now to ftpii:
Filezilla is able to connect without problems and the transfer rate is a little better (about 8 MBits/s).
- Windows 7 DVD failed. Seems the UDF file system isn't supported. Maybe that is why WiiXplorer crashed when trying to open the Windows DVD.
- Tried a PC game disc (Sims 3) but ftpii gave an error when trying to mount it. Strange it is a standard DVD as far as I can tell
- Unprotected (non-CSS) pressed video DVD is mounted right now and I'm pulling one of the VOB files.
For now I would say ftpii is a possibility to extract individual files from DVD (ISO9660). It requires patience. DVD video decryptors should be able to use the encrypted files that can be copied from CSS video DVD.

I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
