Modder releases 60fps mod for Final Fantasy VII on PC

asdasdadas.png

One of the greatest facets of PC gaming is the ability to take games and modify them. Years of effort from fans have resulted in mods that enhance the experience, completely overhaul the gameplay, or even fix bugs that the developers haven't. When it comes to Final Fantasy VII, the PC port was less than stellar; even if your computer was stronger than a PlayStation 1, the highest framerate you could get in-game was a solid 15fps. While such a low framerate in a turn-based game won't affect the gameplay severely, it's still choppy to see in motion.

Which is why a modding team by the name of Tsunamods has gone to lengths to create, and now finally release, a 60fps patch for FFVII on PC. Compatible with the Steam version and the original PC release from 1998, this patch allows the game to run smoothly. Tsunamods has also uploaded a tutorial that helps interested users install the mod, which requires the 60fps patch alongside a mod loader called 7th Heaven and a special driver, all provided as links in the YouTube video.

The Final Fantasy VII 60fps mod is currently in beta, but if you've wanted to see the original FFVII looking better than ever before, then you'll certainly want to give it a try.

Despite having the supported hardware and installing the software, I remember it not being as good as the playstation. This is based off of memory, so it could be unreliable, but I am also reading that it was patched later on too.

Back then it was considered one of the worst ports from Playstation to PC, remember not that many people had Internet back then and Internet was hilariously expensive so releasing a game broken was serious business. Plus even if the patches had been avaliable the day of release you still had to get them at dial up speeds and most people had 36 k speed if they were lucky.

Not surprising, the soundtrack was downgraded for no good reason. There were other issues, but I believe that should be rated as the biggest issue.
I'd argue that requiring a very old GPU to be able to support hardware mode for the graphics would likely stand out to more people.

Keep in mind that because of how tone deaf the average person is, pc gaming audio has practically regressed since Vista dropped inherent support for hardware accelerated audio.

The downgraded soundtrack is definitely a minus; no argument there. But basically being capped at an FX 5950 for the original Eidos PC release was definitely a wake-up call that a lot of players certainly didn't want. And to my knowledge, was never fixed until Square re-released the game on Steam to enable the newer rendering engine.

might start tweaking if i see it run at a higher framerate, i've been used to the game being so unbelievably choppy during fights for so long that i'm not sure if i'll be able to handle it

And it sounded like crap on most machines.
I understand that the whole point to the software synth was to help it to sound the same on "most machines", since PC MIDI tended to vary in quality.

Back then it was considered one of the worst ports from Playstation to PC
How many ports from Playstation to PC do you think there were back then!?

remember not that many people had Internet back then and Internet was hilariously expensive so releasing a game broken was serious business.
Not many people having Internet also meant that people couldn't start tweeting en-masse about how broken a game was. And this also wasn't so long after the time that people were expected to figure out how to radically re-configure their computers whenever they wanted to run something new.

Plus even if the patches had been avaliable the day of release you still had to get them at dial up speeds and most people had 36 k speed if they were lucky.
Except the official 1.02 patch was only about two megabytes.

Aali's custom graphic driver was available long before the Square re-release. I have the impression that the Steam release basically reused that, but I'm a bit fuzzy on the details. Of course Aali's graphic driver was not an official fix, but for that matter there was never an official fix for the XP grash bugs either.

There were also custom sound drivers that would let you replace the music with whatever you wanted, including PSF rips from the Playstation version. But I'm sure comparisions to the PC soundtrack have been done to death elsewhere on the Internet.

About 50% of my enjoyment of FF games are in the music. I'd get the OST's, arrangements, and piano books. When I played in on PC (b/c no PlayStation) I remembered FFIII having better sound.

I had no other issues though.

There was a lot of Playstation games that were later released for Windows. Pandemonium 2 was considerable better on PC, and that's just me saying things from memory. There was also PC games that had no business being on the Playstation and were ported from PC to Playstation anyway, like the Discworld adventure games and Diablo.

Not many people having Internet also meant that people couldn't start tweeting en-masse about how broken a game was. And this also wasn't so long after the time that people were expected to figure out how to radically re-configure their computers whenever they wanted to run something new.

As mentioned, at the time of release it only worked in like 2 video cards. So even PC magazines reviews recommend not getting the game unless you had those specific video cards.

The other 60 fps were complete hackjobs and messed with engine speed, if this is truly what it sounds like then this is a major step. Hope to see it arrive on the switch!

This is just a minor poke at the dev in the video, but... using the remake models for the menu sprites is pretty gross (yes, I know they're from separate mods). :P Great work, though.

Just play the Remake /s

I finished the Steam version and I remember it being buggy at certain parts and also having some localization errors.
Worst part was the Soldier minigame on Keyboard lol.
The Remake is not even the same genre. Also it doesnt cover the entire story of FFVII.
Beleive it or not, but some people actually prefer turn based classic style jRPG's over action jRPG.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake should not be viewed as the definitive version of Final Fantasy VII.
It's still relevant to play the original game. Again, view them as 2 different games based on the same story.

This is nice, but I can't help but feel a little annoyed that in 2022 devs don't seem to care to implement something as simple as this, hoping that some fan will do it.

The fans are the only ones who really care. They're not going to sell more copies of this game by advertising it as having 60 fps – and even if they do sell more copies, they won't make much profit at the price they're charging.
