Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard in record-setting $68.7 billion deal

FJY1RSjXMAECvK5.jpg

Microsoft announced today it would be acquiring Activision Blizzard, adding some of the biggest franchises in gaming to its portfolio, including World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and Candy Crush. The deal is currently the largest in the history of the video game industry, beating the record set only last week when Take-Two acquired Zynga for $12.7 billion. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick will remain in his current role. While the announcement does not comment on whether or not Activision games will now be exclusive to Microsoft platforms, it does reference Microsoft's intention bolster Game Pass with Activision's portfolio, also announcing that Game Pass has recently reached a milestone subscriber count of 25 million. The deal is expected to close in the fiscal year 2023 and will make Microsoft the third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony.

The merger comes at a tumultuous time for Activision Blizzard, after both the State of California and the SEC began investigating reports of sexual misconduct and worker discrimination at the company last summer. This controversy drew responses from across the industry, with PlayStation boss Jim Ryan reportedly condemning the company in an internal memo to employees, and Xbox CEO Phil Spencer stating in November that he would be "evaluating" his relationship with Activision Blizzard moving forward and that he was "disturbed and deeply troubled" by the reports. In an interview with The New York Times last week, Spencer said "we have changed how we do certain things with them, and they’re aware of that. But I also — this isn’t about, for us as Xbox, virtue-shaming other companies. Xbox’s history is not spotless." In a press release accompanying the acquisition announcement, Microsoft CEO and chairman Satya Nadella said “We’re investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all.” To add to Activision's woes, the last Call of Duty release, Vanguard, reportedly performed below expectations and failed to beat the previous year's release, with some rumours circulating that the next Call of Duty may be moved up in the schedule to compensate.

This acquisition continues Microsoft's recent trend of major acquisitions across the gaming industry. Last September, they acquired publishing giant Zenimax, and have been purchasing scores of smaller studios for the past several years, including Obsidian, Double Fine and Ninja Theory.

While this acquisition is pretty much a win for the men and women working at activision blizzard if Microsoft doesn't decide to lay them off. I don't really have too much faith when it actually comes to getting games out. Microsoft has acquired a bunch of studios beforehand and a majority of them have yet to produce anything. I know that games take long to make, especially when people value graphics/movie experiences over actual gameplay, but come on. The fact that Microsoft basically had anything worth of note besides what? Sea of Thieves and recently Halo Infinite is not a good sign for current gaming. Playstation/Sony is a joke. The PS5 is basically in a Vita state right now being a glorified brick when it comes to current gen games, but a decent performer if you want to run your last gen Ps4 games. The Switch is underpowered but at least they've produced games.

Honestly it does give me some hope even tho maybe it shouldn't ?
Well, maybe not hope, but I'm excited to see what it means for the industry. Will Call of Duty stop releasing on the Playstation, and if it does, what will happens ? I know there are a lot of people who just play Fifa and Call of Duty casually and usually buy a Playstation for that, will they get an Xbox or will they stick to Battlefield or some other franchise ?
And what about Blizzard ?
I'm pretty sure Kotick will be kicked out, which is very good news. Well, he will get a huge paycheck but it doesn't matter too much as long as he is gone. I do hope that Microsoft will try to restore a bit of the « Blizzard's spirit » that was gone.

Oh and also Call of Duty on the gamepass is such a huge deal for them. It already should be a free to play game, having it on the game pass will allow me to play it, I'm never planning on buying a yearly 60€ game filled with micro transactions.
first off, I don't think it would be possible for them to make COD Xbox exclusive, Activision still has enough autonomy to ensure that, and also some games like COD and Minecraft, would lose too much money if they were made xbox exclusives.

Hopefully this means Overwatch 2 actually happens and hopefully it means that Overwatch, WoW and other slowly dying Blizzard games are revived.

Are we 100% sure they will remove Call of Duty games in the future from Playstation? They make bank.
100% not happening, COD is way too big a franchise to be removed from its second biggest platform. Also Microsoft acquiring a game doesn't immediately mean it will be an Xbox exclusive, look at Minecraft.

one thing you can never acuse nintendo is not producing games, nintendo games arent as ambitious so they can produce alot of games without taking 5 years to make each one, this is the problem with this generation and upcoming ones, the games are getting so big and so detailled that each studio needs like 5+ years to produce an AAA game, and considering a generation doesnt last 10 years you get 1 game per ip per generation on sony/microsoft from now on, i think nintendo doesnt want to get big specs just for this, they can make their games simple and still appealing without loosing 5+ years on each.

Vanguard and Cold War are both number 1 and 2 of 2021. Nice try being ignorant though

"Call of Duty bad"

By that moronic logic, I suppose since people like Drake and Justin Bieber had best selling albums in 2021, that they are somehow a couple of the greatest musicians on the planet. Popularity and sales do not equate "good". Yet you make comments about ignorance. Smfh. Call of Duty and the majority of Activision/Blizzard games are pure SHIT. Because as is the same with someone like Justin Bieber, I don't care what chart position they have. You can make all the money in the world and still be shit.

oh they will, not the next one since activision still has controll until 2023 but after that you bet your ass they will, microsoft isnt spending 70 billions to keep their games multi-platform, heck they spent 70 billions do you think they care if they loose a couple millions on not releasing cod on ps5? expecialy if more COD players will buy xbox consoles and shift to their side they end up gaining not loosing since they dont even have to pay for development time for ps5 so in the end they probably gain more profit since the game costs will be lower too because they only need to focus on one platform and pc.

You dont spend so much money to keep things the same or that would make zero sense, the next cod will still be on ps5 because until 2023 activision still says whats is what but after that you will get xbox exclusive stuff left and right, Phill said so in the article after the acquisition is over(before march 2023) they will answer to him only, they have no independence after that, they are owned.

Stay on topic. This wasn't about the money anyone makes, it was about things being SHIT regardless of the money they make. Also, it doesn't change the fact your logic was moronic and that calling people ignorant was hypocritical. Also doesn't change the fact that the majority like garbage. This can be seen in everything from music, to movies, to games, to.... The top of the charts is usually some of THE worst out there in all categories. The stuff sells because it has mass media push. Commercials, magazine and tv adverts, giant billboards. Because media and the charts are telling you what is good and what is not. Not because the majority of it is actually any good.

COD Modern Warfare and Warzone alone make 5 million dollars a day, which far outweighs the possible revenue from making it xbox only. There is enough pull towards Xbox just by putting it on gamepass, which for those who play every COD, saves you about $60 a year. This isn't even mentioning the backlash that would come.

Another problem is that if COD was removed from Playstation, playstation players, especially those who just got a playstaion or are just casual COD fans would just switch to an alternative, instead of buying a whole new console.

more detrimental to MS than anything seeing how they're basically going to get caught in the activision lawsuits. Like for fucks sake, Sega is right there Microsoft, ripe for the taking...
I believe you are not familiar with business laws and practices on Japan. It's extremely hard and judicially insecure for any western company buy out a Japanese one. Free market is not a thing there. So Sega is not an equal alternative.

again we will see, not the next cod but 2 cod games from now i can see it happen, same way bethesda is gonna get their games xbox exclusive and they are all important ips too.

Your talking about a company that bought Rare who was nintendo number 2 developer and never letted them release any games on nintendo home consoles so they can do that same thing all over again and not care about consequences. also that money is pocket change for microsoft, for them 5 millions a day is something that if it fell from their pockets, they wouldnt even bother to pick it up from the floor. Also they wouldnt loose 5 a day since they would sell more copy's on pc/xbox so the losswould be much smaller.

>>>>>>>>>SEVENTY BILLION

unless they completely overhaul the Activision/Blizz with new staff and are just using the company for the IPs this purchase is WORTHLESS, this would've been an amazing purchase 10-12 years ago back when activision was on top of their game, but now they're just taking over a controversial conglomerate that's fresh out of ideas. If MS's ownership can turn this around I'll be pleasantly surprised.

bruh they've got 16 million ps5s sold in 1 year they'll be fine
BUUUUUUUT those 16 million customers wont be happy if they have no more than a handful of Sony first party games interactive movies to play.
I also wonder how many of those 16 mil are still sitting in scalpers houses :P

All in all this isn't pushing me to finally unpack and set up the PS5 in the box my cat is currently sitting on :P

I'm not sure if I'm happy with this... I am a fan of the Xbox platform but it seems that the big Ms has been on a mission acquiring as many gaming companies as they can...
