Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard in record-setting $68.7 billion deal

Microsoft announced today it would be acquiring Activision Blizzard, adding some of the biggest franchises in gaming to its portfolio, including World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and Candy Crush. The deal is currently the largest in the history of the video game industry, beating the record set only last week when Take-Two acquired Zynga for $12.7 billion. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick will remain in his current role. While the announcement does not comment on whether or not Activision games will now be exclusive to Microsoft platforms, it does reference Microsoft's intention bolster Game Pass with Activision's portfolio, also announcing that Game Pass has recently reached a milestone subscriber count of 25 million. The deal is expected to close in the fiscal year 2023 and will make Microsoft the third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony.

The merger comes at a tumultuous time for Activision Blizzard, after both the State of California and the SEC began investigating reports of sexual misconduct and worker discrimination at the company last summer. This controversy drew responses from across the industry, with PlayStation boss Jim Ryan reportedly condemning the company in an internal memo to employees, and Xbox CEO Phil Spencer stating in November that he would be "evaluating" his relationship with Activision Blizzard moving forward and that he was "disturbed and deeply troubled" by the reports. In an interview with The New York Times last week, Spencer said "we have changed how we do certain things with them, and they’re aware of that. But I also — this isn’t about, for us as Xbox, virtue-shaming other companies. Xbox’s history is not spotless." In a press release accompanying the acquisition announcement, Microsoft CEO and chairman Satya Nadella said “We’re investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all.” To add to Activision's woes, the last Call of Duty release, Vanguard, reportedly performed below expectations and failed to beat the previous year's release, with some rumours circulating that the next Call of Duty may be moved up in the schedule to compensate.

This acquisition continues Microsoft's recent trend of major acquisitions across the gaming industry. Last September, they acquired publishing giant Zenimax, and have been purchasing scores of smaller studios for the past several years, including Obsidian, Double Fine and Ninja Theory.

So, what you're telling me, is that when trust and value in Blizzard is at a pretty deep low, Microsoft is buying them? Hmmmmmmmm smells like a long planned scheme to me lol
They're dropping nearly 70 billion on it. I'd say it's a safe bet there's a motive or two behind it.

Crash & Banjo crossover when?

But seriously, from the jaws of one beast to another. Not only is Kotick still there, but now Moneyman Gates himself stands on top. What a mess.
For one, the process of moving around executives/management positions in an acquisition is not a day/night process. It takes months if not longer for that to be hammered out, sure enough toxic elements of the company will probably be dealt with as they do not need that kind of weight/baggage lingering around. Their situation is public news and the company and its employees are well had enough of it. MS is not going to carry that kind of baggage when the process is finalized.

Secondly, Gates has not been in the forefront of the company's direction since the early/mid 2000's. I mean hell, the company has gone through one or two CEO's since he stepped down.

Most people probably don’t care about this anymore but please, please, PLEASE on the off chance Overwatch 2 actually sees the light of day please let it not be exclusive. It’s literally the one Blizzard IP I give two shits about.
This isn't Nintendo.

Microsoft knows better not to make a game exclusive because it sells far better as a multiplatform. Microsoft has been pretty friendly when it comes to their IP/games on rival consoles and even tried to work out a deal with Nintendo for Smash or something, but didn't work out.

Honestly this is probably a great move for all that drama. Bobby will be let go I'm sure (with a fat paycheck unfortunately), and then Microsoft will get the culture of Activision in line with the rest of Microsoft.
They were probably able to acquire it in the first place because of how much of a hit it took in value over the recent problems its had. Its an outcome that would if anything would prove to be better for everyone involved with maybe the exception of some Executives getting the boot. No need to keep toxic elements in the company you are buying as it was so easy to get in the first place due to their failings.
ofc they probably did their there to clean house
I should have made this more clear but also just woke up and made that post. I shocked it’s actually legible. I am more shocked that they bought them while the lawsuit is still on going. They should have waited for the lawsuit to finish, did more damages to the company, then pushed for a lower bet. They could have looked like the “good guys” by then cleaning house. Now they are going to be involved with this lawsuit, which could either mean they let it all happen or possibly risk making a dick move and moving their lawyers in to help.

Calling it now, just like with the Zenimax deal, future games released by Activision Blizzard will be PC/Xbox exclusive. No one drops 67 Billion dollars just to share the properties with your competition.

Glad my Gamepass doesn't expire until the end of 2026
I bet at that point MS will probably own Sega and a few other companies by then and will be looking lustily at Nintendo as they hit another dark age in either their lack of new hardware still supporting the Switch or having new hardware but it ending up being like the Wii U again in terms of sales and lack of fanfare.

The other thing to note too is that its more profitable for MS to make things multi-platform. Sure you can claim to be the king and have everything funneled to one console, or you can still let everyone eat cake and rake in the profits from every platform available.

Its more profitable for them to do this. The only arguable point here might be Xcloud/Gamepass but this is probably to fight the competitors in that space which have yet to really heat up in any considerable fashion. There are multiple parties invested in the game streaming space but MS might have the gold crown in terms of control here, and that is where your exclusivity might come into play as there is no benefit to lend their games onto other game streaming services.

I only see this as good for everyone except Sony. It’s good for Xbox players, good for PC players and will be good for the employees at Activision. MS won’t stand for any of the shit that went on before at Activison Blizzard and will most definitely clean house ASAP.
Personally I’m not bothered about COD or WOW but I wouldn’t complain if they became exclusives… that would bring a large portion of PS COD players across in a heartbeat, I do think it won’t be the case though and they will still release on PS and Xbox will have all the exclusive pre order bits and new map exclusively that PS has enjoyed previously. And of course it’s great for GamePass subs 😁

I'm sure this news means Bobby is on the way out (probably with a huge check of course).

What might happen is that MS might simply open the doors to what went down prior to their purchase and simply give up any rouge elements (IE. Executives) to the law while assuring the company in their ownership is not pursuing that kind of culture/mentality.

Its like buying a storage locker that was full of the previous owners stuff and finding a gun in there. You can either take it for yourself or report it to the police in which they will confiscate it. The latter is the proper thing to do as it clears you of any potential legal situations (and in some states its just straight up illegal to own a gun this way). MS knows there are problem elements here, and they will likely give up what they need to in order to keep what they want, which is the company itself and the IP's. I do not think MS is going to protect anyone here or defend anything that went down in the company, as it would only shine a light on their end and cause issues for MS as a whole. This buyout is likely a mercy for the company to stay afloat and for the Execs to cash in before trying to take the nearest flight out to some international waters private islands that they will try to hide out in.
