Title says it all. Obviously this is easy to figure out if the file or app has a version number but for the ones that don't have that info listed what is the best way to determine if the newest release is an update?

Yeah that's how I've updated the ones that I know are out of date due to version numbers being listed within the homebrew or files. I'm trying to determine if something needs an update when there is no version number in the files or the homebrew itself. sys-clk-overlay for example, there's nowhere that I can locate the version number. There's a few examples and maybe I'm just blind or dumb. I just don't wanna go overwriting all the files if they don't have an update, you feel me?
I think there was, or is, an appstore homebrew where you would get updates from. But even there they had to be manually added to it and people stopped using it (not 100% sure on this tho).
So sadly, the only viable way I can think of is what Shadow#1 said, you need to be aware of the versions and know when to update yourself.
I usually follow this rule: Only update if you're looking forward any new feature or something broke. If it's working fine, it doesn't need to be updated.
