New Sony patent hints at a possible PlayStation mobile gaming controller

longshock.png

A new patent published by Sony Interactive Japan hints at the company possibly trying to make a bigger foray into the mobile gaming market. The document, which was discovered by VGC, shows a depiction of a DualShock 4 controller, but with an elongated center where the touchpad normally would be. Presumably, you would place the phone into the controller, much like with other popular mobile gamepads, such as the Razer Kishi or GameSir X2. This would be in line with Sony's previous statement from May 2021, where CEO Jim Ryan claimed iconic Sony IPs would be headed to mobile platforms in 2022, and with the company's hiring of the former head of Apple Arcade. As this is just a patent, things can change before any official release, if the device ever gets to that point in development.

Actually, PSP was doing very well but Vita didn't. So they could improvement what Vita doesn't do that well.
the only way sony could have improved the vita would have been to actually support its own console, some will moan at its high memory card price, which yea i guess in an attempt to not repeat the same problem for piracy on the psp to the vita would be to make a custom card.

the vita was a darn good device for its time, it offered console quality gaming on the go, but sony didnt support it and devs that were excited about it, didnt really bother to make console quality versions of its games, but it did have some good games.

i enjoy my vita and games, its also a nice tiny device good for retroarch builds.

i would love to see sony attempt another handheld console, but would it be another system that will end up having devs port its old console titles just like the usual we get on nintendo with the switch.

do we really need a new console for that? and i cant see sony pushing the hardware to be something subpar to next gen console as it would be another risk of an expensive failure, tho id imagine it would get some decent games.

Wait, I'm confused. "Put the phone back in landscape mode," you game in portrait mode? Wait, you can't game in portrait mode with this controller, it forces you into landscape mode.
I’m high lmao got the words flipped around

Why would sony do another handheld console when both the psp and vita didn't do that well.

But the gates are open for the nintendo fanboys to start ranting ohh they're copying nintendo again...... like nintendo invented the idea of a tablet playing games.
PSP did amazing. And the only reason the vita “failed” because they didn’t support it nearly as much outside of Japan, plus other idiotic decisions

Like expensive shitty exclusive memory cards. I’ve had several that just died out on me

Seems like an official controller split in half to hold your smartphone in the middle and then allowing remote play of your Playstation or Xbox should be a no-brainer in an age where they don't seem too interested in releasing a dedicated handheld, yet are noting the success that Nintendo continues to see with its hybrid concept. I'm honestly surprised this hasn't happened sooner (officially anyway, there are similar devices for phones, just not yet made by Sony or Microsoft).

Ah, gotcha.

Well, luckily, landscape mode on the home screen and apps have improved lately, depending on the Android phone you have. So everything can be done in landscape mode, and you can control it all with your controller, keyboard included. Of course, you can also hold the controller with one hand and still use the touch screen with your other hand for typing and using the phone that way.

What if this is like the Playstation Classic, but in a mobile form-factor? That would be cooler than the God of War Gacha game they're probably planning.
That would be cool. A PS1/PS2 classic in a mobile form factor. But it need a dedicated touch screen on it, like the Vita, not slide in my own phone. Or maybe make it like the Switch, so the touch screen part slides off and docks into a home dock to play on big Tv.

Man, that looks like an ugly Switch/Steam Deck.

When the "Mini" consoles everyone took a chance at, now seems the same, too.
