Hey there! It's been a while.

So After succesfully homebrewing my Wii U I want to try and get an HDD for it.
Since the Wii U has some weird compatibility issues, I'd prefer to find all the neccesary stuff for HDD (Y'know, Enclosure, Y-Cable, etc.)

Hello,

@Bruhderp78

If that can help you :

I am using a Transcend 2.5, USB 2.0 external hard drive with a Y cable and it works fine.

WDs generally work very well with Wii U, see reviews on the forum.

I am using a 516gb microsd card inside a mini USB card reader.
Works perfectly if you move your wiiu around the house.

How long have you used this micro SD card on your Wii U? and how do you use it? Do you load games through a backup loader?
I have zero experience using micro SD cards with a USB adapter, but I've had 2 USB drives dying after a couple months of use exclusively on a Wii, so I usually only recommend HDDs.

... for about a year now - works perfectly ...

When you use a USB Card reader on the wiiu it detects it like any other HDD

1. Insert USB Card Reader with the Wiiu powered Off
2. Power on the Wiiu
3. WiiU will bring up a menu saying the HDD needs to be formatted - allow it to format
4. Download eshop games , OR install Games using wup_installer_gx2

Basically you can do the same thing with a USB card reader as you would having a 2.5" or 3.5" HDD connected
I just prefer to use the card reader since its easier to transport the Wiiu without any additional cables
