I spent wayy too long reading posts about this before buying my N3DSXL and in the end ordered two of the refurbished units direct from Nintendo (a red and a galaxy version). They both ended up having dual TN screens but I am keeping the red one because it is way better calibrated colors than the galaxy, which has the dreaded yellow tint on all white backgrounds and and generally just looks more accurate.

The viewing angles don't bother me like I thought they would and I am overall happy with my purchase. At the end of the day, it is a total crapshoot and you could get a very well calibrated TN and a really yucky IPS, the point is that Nintendo really cheaped out on their 3DS screens and thankfully didn't repeat that mistake (for the most part) with the Switch.

For everyone saying it's the same gaming experience etc., I must disagree:

1) Paying the same for a cheaper part for a console that will last for years is ridiculous (you can't even change it without risking to ruin it, but you are set up to this situation)

2) The tint on TN top screens is horrible, as they have poor temperature calibration

3) We shouldn't justify Nintendo's deliberate cheap action to create an unfair situation

4) Nintendo's attitude on this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't agree with you.

1) Nintendo never guaranteed the screens to be IPS, so that's not dishonest

2) This isn't related to the fact the panel is a TN but to the crappy calibration made when the console is produced. I have had between my hands 3DSses with yellow-ish IPS panels which where far worse than my current 3DS XL's TN panel.

3) That's not unfair. You're expected to receive a TN panel, and if you're lucky you get an IPS one, which is fair.

4) Nintendo doesn't have to do anything to this, as they didn't guaranteed the screens to be IPS.

It's like saying when you purchase a TN PC monitor and receive an IPS one with all the same specifications but with better colors, "that's unfair that some people receive a TN panel, everyone should receive an IPS one."

Why are we meant to receive a TN panel instead of IPS panel? Just because Nintendo doesn't say does not justify creating the same model with cheaper parts.

Color calibration is another unacceptable issue.

Yes it does. Nintendo never told the model would receive an IPS panel, so it's not unfair to put TN models in models. Also, that's not TN models which are worse than standard IPS models, but IPS models which are better than the standard TN models.

And color calibration is not an "unacceptable" issue as they never guaranteed any calibration of any sort. Mostly because it would cost a lot more money to get a better panel and a good calibration, just look at the price of a correctly calibrated PC monitor.

The ips screen is so much better than the tn screen. I know because I have old 3ds and the new 3ds, so I can compare. But even if you don't have 2 3ds's to compare but you've seen the screen on both of them you can easily notice the difference. The only thing I don't like on the new 3ds is that the screen on the hinge moving left and right. It's very distracting when you playing games that using gyroscope and tilting the 3ds.
