Oculus releases unlocked OS for discontinued Oculus Go headset

Facebook has released an unlocked operating system for its Oculus Go headsets that allows users to run their own software on the device. This new OS stops the headset from signature-checking the boot.img, meaning users are free to replace that with whatever they wish, granting them unrestricted access to the headset. Of course, this also removes the necessity of using a Facebook or Oculus account with the device. However, the process is irreversible, and you will no longer receive over-the-air updates after you've unlocked the OS.

This move comes about a year after Facebook discontinued the Go line, and shut down app development last December. While there will still be firmware and security updates pushed to the Go until 2022, this unlocked OS should allow users to support the device indefinitely.

Hey Facebook, if you do this for the quest 2 I'll buy it.

Yes I know about Oculess, but you still need an account to boot the device and a verified FB account for developer options access.
what do you mean by verified? i have dev options on with just my regular FB account, unless you mean verfied email/number?

Don’t consider buying a headset right now

Details in the VR group because that’s a lot of words to type again

Oculus Connect doesn't necessarily mean new tech is being announced. Could be new features coming to the headset and/or some new groundbreaking software. Its mere speculation right now. The Quest 2 won't be going anywhere for a while. Also, IF any tech is announced it might have a high price tag that some might not find accessible. I feel that £300 for the 128gb Quest 2 is more than reasonable seeing as what you get for that.

I don't exactly remember where I saw the article, but it seems like they're going to announce a pro headset. Which if this is the case, I doubt they'll drop the price of the Quest 2 128gb.

Reasonable for us
But they do lose money for every Q2 purchase

However they have been working on a new headset for quite awhile
One meant to be a predecessor for the Quest 2, and I don’t imagine they’ll be making it all incredibly cheap considering how they’ve had to rely purely on software sales for over a year now

Anyways as someone who’s been in the VR scene for several years, I’m nearly certain they will be announcing new tech of some sort
