Sources claim that Game Boy Color games are headed to Nintendo Switch Online's service

ewwea.png

For a few years now, Nintendo has been adding a handful of games on occasion to its NES and SNES library for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Those tired of just those two platforms might be interested to know that there's potentially a new-old catalog of games headed to the Switch, if rumors are to be believed. An episode of a Nate the Hate podcast speculated that Game Boy games were to be imminently offered as part of Switch Online, with two other news outlets--Eurogamer and NintendoLife--corroborating the report with inside sources. Eurogamer even claims that more than just Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are being considered for eventual release, while NintendoLife contradicted it, saying that they did not hear any mention of anything beyond just GB/C.

For now, it remains unconfirmed, though this month marks the third anniversary of Nintendo Switch Online as a service, which would make it an opportune time to have such a reveal. Previously, a UI datamine implied that more than just NES games would be added, with SNES being the only new platform to be offered since then. Do you expect to see Game Boy games arrive on the Switch? Or perhaps more than just that, eventually?

Nintendo Life has also confirmed with its own sources that Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles are likely coming to the Switch Online service "really soon".

The same insider is far less optimistic about Game Boy Advance titles arriving on the paid online service in the near future - noting how several companies are currently working on re-releases, including Nintendo, who has the Advance Wars remaster coming out this December. We've also not heard anything about Game Boy Advance titles being included in this update.

3DS and Wii U did it better.
Weird how the Switch is the ultimate drip-feed machine for Nintendo now.
And the ultimate port machine of Wii, PS3, Wii U, and 360 games. Not to mention 90% of the eShop games are just indie garbage, flooded in from Steam.

It perfectly reflects the state the "gaming industry" is in.
Same goes for Sony and Xböx...
Supscriptions ? Gamepass ?
Good luck with customer service when you really don't even have the game in your hands anymore...

If GaaS, DLC-BS, and CloudGaming ever win - which might happen quite soon - I'll gladly look for a new hobby.

"90% of everything is c#@p":
Many are low effort garBage, some are great.
Haven, American Fugitive and Q-YO Blaster f.e.

(Some) Indies have to try as hard as the now big publishers had to in the olden days...

Just curious here, but would added GBC/GB/GBA games be much of a game-changer for you guys? It would still require an internet connection to access, and at this point the magic seems to have worn off(or maybe that's just me).

I already have previous systems with a respective collection, so it wouldn't change much. My Switch only gets picked up for ports and indies, and the added Gameboy collection wouldn't hook me back.

The amount of complaining people do about a service that costs less than $20 a year for access to 100+ games (in addition to other online capabilities) always surprises me.
At this point, I'm only paying the $20 for the retro library. I'd rather pay upfront for offline access to the older Nintendo titles. Not to mention, even for $20, the service itself is absolutely terrible.

If you don’t think the service is worth $20, no one is forcing you to use it.

i don't know what to say to this.

i just found out you need online to play the classic games...

IMO we do not need GB/GBC color games.

also NINTENDO make it where we can play the NES/SNES games with random's man fuck having the friend thing to play classic games.

With regard to people asking fo Wii/GC is the switch even powerful enough to properly emulate those?
Not properly, but quite a few GC games would probably work with a variable underclock of the emulated CPU, while Wii games probably would only work when partially recompiled (except some that didn't really push the Wii, like NSMBW).

switch had horrible physical controlls for retro games. PS vita is way more comfortable if you want handheld retro gaming machine.
Most older games rely on dpad and are designed with that in mind, and dpad is non existant on switch and on lite its cramped and uncomfortable.

On top of that you dont even own the games, you rent them..which is fine, but you cant buy if you wish to, ONLY rent.
So even if i hack switch lite and add bunch of roms and emulators, swirch is still physically uncomfortable to play retro games...even switch games give cramps!

So this is not really a good news for me at least.

Its a shame they wont release all nintendo old games on one or two cartrigges and be done with it. i guess greed in strong in them.

See, it's shit takes like this that excuse bad services. Why are people okay with mediocrity these days?
that's really a question for psychologist and sociologist imo.
Anyone with a degree in psychology and/or sociology here to answer?

I'm actually being serious. i want to know mentality behind that, also i like psychology in general.

thats true, no one does force anyone, but its the trend that is the problem. it used to be goods, now its a service, and later it will all be like this.
Im not fine with that. Its the best for company not for gamers who are pashionate about games and collecting. Service should be an option not the main supply chain (but i fear it soon will be with that mentality in general, nothing personal to you, but people will be ok with it, companies will go crazy with it and no more games to buy. it already is. games dont even have manuals, they sell physical boxes with downloadable codes, retro streamable games....and im all for that believe me, i think its a great thing really, its as i always say, lac of options is never a good thing! metroid other m would be better if sakamoto included option for nunchuck, just an option. no one would say a word.)

in general switch sucks, but it has some good games that are exclusive. i can say many cause many are awailable on pc or other platforms in superior versions, and everione has a pc and a steam (not to mention colossal price drops on steam)

Well anywayswitch is also really uncomfortable to hold, at least lite is, and wiiU wasnt really that good, i mean it was but it had its flaws like black filters etc... i mean they seems unable to just make decent retro machine on their curent console. 3DS was imo the only one that worked good and where you canactually buy games instead of renting, and not waiting month just to get a crappy game...ok wii and wiiU also you can buy them.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Define Retro. The Wii came out in 2006 and the WiiU has its games ported over to the Switch.

style and fashion of the past are 2D games not 3D even if they look old as PSX.
So the way i see it is 2D gaming consoles are retro such as atari, amiga, nes, snes, genesis, game gear etc...

GameCube, PSX, PS2 is a modern, oldER console, not retro one cause 3D is a new fashion, that is still relevant.
now In terms of how 3D games look, old or new, thats a different story.

That's an interesting point you raise. We did not originally report the rumor. However, after 3 different independent sources confirmed it (a podcaster first, then Nintendo Life, then Eurogamer) and I insist on "independent sources", as in, not using each other as sources; then I asked Chary to report it.

Honestly it doesn't sound like a crazy rumor. Nintendo has done it in the past on other systems, so it's kind of overdue, don't you think?

*Nintendo drops N64 and Genesis games on us at a hefty upgrade premium, instead of Gameboy Color games*

View attachment 281693
Game Boy as an NSO add is a safe guess that insiders could peddle so that if they were right they'd have more cred, of course it didn't actually happen

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
