TL;DR:
i want a way to remove the system update nag without needing to enter recovery mode

so, i have an o3ds xl, with updated cfw and all the stuff. i dont know if is banned or not, and i do not care. but, for whatever reasons, i dont want to update it. in fact at some point i intend to downgrade it because i miss the ntrcfw option to manually regulate screen backlight that got (accidentally) patched by nintendo at some version, i dont even remember wich, so please dont just say "just update it" and ignore the request

from time to time, i connect it to diverse wifi networks (so custom dns are not really an option) to do ftp and other stuff. with that scenario, its only a question of time before the 3ds downloads a system version update in the background and then starts bothering me to install it. wich i dont appreciate. moreso, when the home menu loading takes as much time as it takes (big sd, cluster size, custom theme, etc) without extra stuff having to load "just because"

the obvious and easy solution here would be to boot in safe/recovery mode, R L A up, cancel the update, and see with a smile how the downloaded update gets yeeted into the digital void. but that is not exactly simple for me, since i have fastboot, payloads, emunand, luma password just because i can, and whatnot, that get in the way of "pressing keys while booting". i could do the tedious work of disabling all that stuff for a while, injecting emunand into sysnand, deleting the update, restoring emunand to sd, and reenabling that stuff. but im just. too lazy. there has to be an easier way. even if it is not "invented" yet, the 3ds is so open in any posible sense that i find it hard to believe that it is not doable, and instead i just guess that, since the need for such a thing is so marginal, noone stoped to think/care about it

i have seen that luma "discarded" it as undoable a long time ago, but i want to think that enough stuff has changed since back then to make this feature more feasible now. cthulhu doesnt have such an option either, and a shallow look at godmode9 doesnt hint that it can do what i want either. i have tried the "update supressor" homebrew, but i think it was just to remove the update nag from the installed titles, not from the home menu (this meaning: on the upper screen, a small line of text saying to open the eshop to update the game, completely unrelated to updating the 3ds system firmware)

i do not have a github account and i wont take the time to open an issue there, so if someone think this is an interesting enough feature request and posts an issue on my behalf, i will be thankful. or, even better, if someone just says "yeah you can just use this thing to delete the downloaded update from sys/emunand" i will have my daily dose of joy fulfilled.

if anyone has actually read all that text, you have lost the game. just because.

edit: ah shoot, i posted it into the 3ds thing directly instead of on a 3ds subforum. my bad.

op, I'll let you know if I receive a response. I'll get an email notification if I do. I don't know how often the team looks at their github. luma hasn't been updated in a while, since it's pretty damn stable as is.

It shouldn't nag you, unless you want to
Play online or access the eShop.
i do not fully understand what that means, but

i have no interest in playing online nor accessing the eshop. but, for whatever reasons, i want to keep my 3ds on a not up to date system version, and also connect it to the internet from time to time. i dont want to press "cancel" a bunch of times everyday on the home menu, on a popup that only steals me from my free time and remaining battery, no matter how small the loss, everytime that popup appears. and therefore, i am looking for a way to make that popup gone forever from my device

so, unless i am missunderstanding your post, and what you are really saying is "opening the eshop deletes the predownloaded update" (i have never in my life opened the eshop, not even once), im afraid your post is not helping me

cool, thanks again. i assumed from the beggining that i would not have an instant solution, and i'd be surprised if another luma release happens in the next 6 months, but even if the next luma release happens in two years, it would still be better to have this feature then than to not have it ever. also maybe any developer who forks from luma visits their issues page to get ideas from new features, and iirc there are one or two luma forks that are a bit more regularly updated nowadays

im kinda "*forgets things exist*", so i will try to look at this post from time to time as often as my memory lets me in case it got new replies but in all honesty i dont trust myself enough so im gonna warn that i might not reply for long times

I didn't say that, i said that the update notice should pop up when you try to access the eShop or when you want to play online. What you're experiencing shouldn't happen at all, encountering the update pop up every time you turn on the 3DS.. By any chance, you're not on Emunand? and you do have Luma3DS boot file in the CTRNAND?

i do use emunand, yes, but it is irrelevant, because the exact same thing has happened to me in the past with a n3ds xl that never had an emunand. the luma boot file can be either in ctrnand and in the sd without it affecting the result

i havent really studied this, but afaik, the update nag when trying to access online services is more a "3ds connects with nintendo servers > nintendo servers reply 'update or die' > the "download and install update" nag appears", while the nag i am suffering from is more a "the 3ds downloaded an update in the background, it is already downloaded and ready to install, proceed now?" thing. i may be wrong but i think it goes like that

Unless you're on a very old firmware maybe that's why is doing that, 'cause in many instances i stayed like 2 months until i update my 3DS to the the latest version (i did this for the last 3DS update), without encountering anything like that. Could be something else at play here..
I asked you about the Emunand, 'cause if that was on the latest firmware and the sysnand is on an older firmware, if you boot into the sysnand and that's when it keeps giving you the pop up, since both are seperate, though it doesn't explain why it does so in the first place.

You can still downgrade with a NAND backup or ctrtransfer later. What you're asking is not worth the trouble. Just make a NAND backup before updating and you can always go back easily. Much less hassle...

I got a reply from the luma devs:

Once you have b9s or fasboot3ds installed, there are exactly ZERO reasons to not update. Not worth the time, as this "problem" is 100% your choice and 100% your fault.

alright, he edited the response after I received the notification. here's the last part of it:

You can always delete the update files with FBI anyway.

The problem is that every time you connect to any wifi point. The console is going to put those update nags into the future files. You can remove future files from FBI. But any connection to wifi will bring them back.

sorry about late reply, life got in the way and whenever i had the chance to reply i was unable to vibe with life and therefore used my free time to do nothing. sweet, sweet doing nothing. also i missplaced my 3ds xd

i could give a longer answer but the short version is: my brain bamboozled me. i __knew__ a thing that, when i investigated to specify about my problem, turned out to not be true (wich, if anyone is interested, was the ability to reduce screen backlight under normal levels or even turn it off, for some reason i thought that it got patched around 11.3 or 11.4 - so yea a long spanning brain lag)

seeing that my very marginal "reason" to not update never really existed, yeah, update is the reasonable thing to do

thanks to everyone who bothered to read and reply to my post, you are cool =D (especially you who ported my request to github, where what happened is exactly what i guessed that would happen. and i dont mean it in a bad way, their stance on this is completely logical)

though, if anyone has more info on what specifically am i supposed to delete with fbi it would be nice, because i may be blind (not sarcastic, i have an history on skipping info that is 5cm away from my face) but neither 3dbrew or the ylls8 page give anyhing like "this update has the next files: 800F00300A.cia [...]" or anything like that, and im not sure where else i would look for such an info. im curious at this point

Maybe this unofficial Luma3DS build will help. It allows fine brightness control and can go below normal minimum (including 0 – backlight off), above normal maximum and can control upper/lower screen individually.
Enhanced brightness adjustment interface:
  • Adjust brightness of top and bottom screens independently (not possible for o2DS due to single screen hardware)
  • Option to use hidden true maximum brightness (at your own risk?)
  • Option to use hidden true minimum brightness
  • Option to switch off bottom screen backlight entirely

If brightness control is your only reason not to update, this should solve the problem.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.
