I just can't get the Config disc to work but everything else does.
I love how easy it was to install.
What was your soldering approach with the Wiikey. Did you desolder the wires from the 8 pin adapter end of the Wlip? or did you use another approach.
mekaone I'm glad to hear yours is working. My only problem at this point is getting the pic to program properly, but I should have that figured out tomorrow. Goodnight all.
All I did was cut the wires about an inch away from the socket and took an inch off the cover that covered all the wires. I then striped about an 1/8 of an inch on each wire. Then I put just a very small amount of rosin on the spot I was going to solder then hold the wire on that point. Heated up a 15 watt iron and put a small amount of solder on the end and touched the tip of the iron to the point where the rosin, wire and pad were. Let it cool and I was all done. Now 5 more of them and I was all done. I also put a small amount of black tape on the chip after all that was done to keep it from shorting out on something. I went slow even though I have soldering experience and it took me about a half of an hour. Prep time took the longest. I think it is fun to do. If anyone tries it, practice on an old PC card first just to get a feel for how it all works.

Well, shit again. Turns out I don't need a DB9 to DB9 connector (which I just bought), I actually need a DB9 to HD15 connector! So I'm going to have to order that online and wait 2-7 days for shipping. This is turning in to a nightmare.
Problem might be the voltage. I believe 12V is required to program a PIC but some mother boards only supply 5V on their ports.
Any idea how I can get the voltage up then? Winpic allows me to choose Low, Norm (5V),or High for the Vdd Select. If I connect directly to my serial will that get my voltage up then?
I've never programmed a PIC before... but something's gone wrong if it takes more than a minute (flashing an ATMEGA8L takes

wouldnt that be ZERO soldering and give you dvd upgradability? seems easier (maybe a little more expensive but if it means not having to take out the chip to program it like with YAOSM then its definitely worth it)

Connecting it directly will not change the voltage.

Well, I've gone over to my parent's place to use their desktop and found that I can plug my programmer directly in to their serial port. However, writing the PICs still isn't working - at all. The closest I got was getting a 12F675 PIC to write and say there were no errors, but plugging it in to the Wlip and testing a game came back with no results. Before that, I got a 12F629 to write everything but what seemed to be the first and last parts. I can't get a single thing written to any 12F683 PICs though.
kedest, thanks for the link, but that's completely useless to me, as unforuntately, I know NOTHING about circuits and making these programmers and such. I don't get it. I'm beat, and I'm ready to sell my Wlip, programmer, cable and PICs to the highest bidder that thinks he can make it work. This has been a disaster.
If anyone has any idea how I can make this work, please let me know. If you have an extra PIC with YAOSM on it that'd you'd be willing to send me, I'd be very thankful. I just don't get why this isn't working and I'm not impressed that I even decided to do this in the first place.

But instead of selling to Wlip, you should keep it and order a Wiinja Deluxe/ask someone else to program a YAOSM for you...
Yeah, I went ahead and finished the Wlip install. I don't want to give up yet, but I'm going to need to find someone else that's willing to program a YAOSM PIC (preferrably 12F683) for me. If anyone on these boards is willing to do that, I'll happily send them all the rest of the PICs I have in exchange (which include 629's, 675's and 683's). Please please someone? Actually, I'd take a YAOSM or a Wiinja Deluxe (if anyone has that hex). I don't think I can justify dropping another $40 or so on a Wiinja from a reseller, so I might just end up with this Wlip hanging out of my Wii for awhile.

That way when I do finally get a drive chip that works, I won't have to open the Wii up again. And if I get my programmer working, the updates will be much easier.

Just don't give up yet! Try another computer. Older computer often do have 12V on their ports.

Don't give up on it. If anything sell the chip and get a Wiikey where you got the Wlip from or some place closer to you to save on the shipping. I and some of my friends have the Wiikey and they work grate! DVD upgradeable is a big plus. Its just my preference but it seems to work good for me.

You sure the problem isn't the programmer your using? It's possible you got a bad one.
No, I'm not sure that the problem isn't the programmer. I have no knowledge of this hardware and was just trying to piece my way through, but I'm having no luck. Do you know anything about this stuff?

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better. -

I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
