Excuse me for opening a thread for this small, insignificant problem. I hope no one will be upset.

Would someone have the kindness to explain to me why it is no longer possible to have an animated avatar? By entering an image in .GIF format as a pfp, its animation does not appear on my profile, much less in my various posts or elsewhere.

Someone suggested me that it has become an exclusive reserved to patrons; is it true or is it a fake news?

I had a whole series of characters in store, to alternate over time as a tribute to the great mangakas of the past. I'm afraid I'll have to give them up.

Thank you 😁

Previously, GIF avatars didn't function on the threads themselves, only just the user profile page. The idea of making GIF avatars work all the way across the forum was an idea in the works as a bonus for Patreons.

However, I'm a Patreon and I just uploaded a GIF avatar--it didn't work at all. I'm assuming this is a bug, or just how XF2 works, though if it can be fixed, it very well may be restricted to a paid tier feature in the future.

But you could post gifs in your profile!

Animation avatar was gone since 2014.... and never be fixed a long time...
But I have always used them, since I registered, as the users who know me can testify! Please, if one doesn't know a topic it's better to keep quiet than to say 💩💩💩

But you could post gifs in your profile!
GIFs can be used everywhere, on the profile and in the posts, but if you insert them as avatar, now they remain static (before they were not, as you know)!!!😢😥

It's probably a security thing. It makes sense to resave uploaded images as whatever format so users can't upload viruses in their pfp

That wouldn't prevent them from being animated though. I'm pretty sure it's intentional, they just don't want animated avatars.
And anyway, there wouldn't be much use to embedding viruses in a PFP unless you could somehow convince someone to download your avatar and rename it to .exe and open it, lol. And if they're that dumb, you probably don't need to go to those lengths.
I guess it's possible to exploit a bug in the image loading or displaying code of browsers to run code, but there's no guarantee resaving the uploaded image would get rid of the exploit anyways, and the code could be crafted as part of the image data so it would survive. The resaving/conversion might just be a built in feature of xF as part of the automatic scaling/resizing/optimization of avatars, and has nothing to do with security.
