I don't like the placement nor the absolute chonkitude of the Steam Deck. The OG Switch is too big a handheld, for me, so this is going to be like holding a giant boulder of a system while playing. That's the price to pay for portability, I suppose, but goodness, was that the best placement for buttons?
With the caveat that the two touchpads "must" be included, yeah it's probably about as good as it gets. Option B would be putting the pads on top and the sticks/buttons underneath, but then half of your hands would hang off the bottom of the grips, and it'd be hard to reach the top bumpers/triggers. Option C would be putting the sticks on the outside and the D-pad/buttons on the inside next to the screen. Believe me when I say that's a nightmare, because it's the same layout as the original GPD Win.

I love the word "chonkitude" though, and ultimately I think that's also Steam Deck's saving grace. At a glance everything looks kinda squished together, but in reality there's plenty of real estate there. Possibly to the point where the majority of complaints will come from people with smaller hands.

I think the buttons will be fine, the only part I'm not sure about yet is the Dpad and unfortunately there's only one way to find out. I've learned not to go by anyone else's opinion when it comes to Dpads so I'll just have to wait until it's in my hands.

I might also be one of the few that sees the chonkiness as a plus, but then I don't intend to carry it outside much.

Portable PCs have actually been around quite a while now, early 2010s is when I first started seeing designs similar to modern ones. I myself previously owned a clamshell GPD Win and an Nvidia Shield Portable (the former being truly uncomfortable and the latter running Android). The biggest issue with them has always been pricing, and that's doubly a concern now with the shortages going on. The GPD Win 3 is going for $1200+ on Amazon, which is approaching gaming laptop territory.
Yes I'm aware that these kinds of devices have been around, but I used that nice qualifier word of 'mainstream,' because the tide is changing and we're going to see a lot of these devices marketed to the masses at more affordable price points, no longer being marketed to a much more niche audience at much more unreasonable prices.

I can't think of any company that would be willing to sell the hardware so cheaply. The only reason Valve is throwing money at this is because they are banking on making it back via Steam. Unless Epic themselves decide to make one I don't see it happening.

I've got the middle one (256 GB) reserved for Q1 2022 (presuming no upcoming issues like pandemics, chip shortages, ships blocking Suez, climate change disasters and similar)

I spend 2 hours a day commuting on a train. It'd be a nice break for my poor tablet that's running overtime so far. :P

I'm not saying they'll all be this low priced in general, I recognize that isn't the case, but they are gonna be cheaper overall than when these were niche and not mainstream devices.

Probably a little too optimistic to assume Steam Deck will be enough to elevate gaming-focused portable PCs to mainstream status. I think Valve would consider ten million sales a roaring success, but that's still extremely weak/niche by console standards.

After all, here we are some months after Steam Deck's reveal, and no new players have entered this hardware space. A few already-established companies have introduced new models (at high prices), but that's about it.

Man, some of you people keep reading way more into what I'm saying than what I'm actually saying. I'm just saying that these devices in general are going to continue to be more affordable than what the GPD Win went for in it's heyday. Good lord.

As for other models in the works I can think of 2 off the top of my head, there's the Alienware UFO which we haven't heard from in a while, curious if that still may be happening or not, and there is Tencent's device announced earlier this year. I'm sure there are plenty of others, but those are the ones that immediately come to my mind. Since I know more are for sure in the works, it's feeding all the more into my wait and see attitude with these devices.

And I'm just saying there's no guarantee of that. Prices very well may stay steady, or even increase depending on the hardware.

Yeah it's been total radio silence since that was announced, and it was announced well before Steam Deck. I'm inclined to say it's dead, but even if not, Alienware isn't exactly known for reasonable pricing.

I'd never support anything they do personally, but at least that's a brand which could potentially take a loss on each unit sold. So we'll have to wait and see on that one.

Ok guarantee or not, I'm just telling you how I foresee it with how things stand now. Yes I'm aware we haven't heard anything about UFO in awhile, hence why I questioned if it's still happening or not. And yeah, I'm not exactly excited that Tencent is in the ring, but it just proves that anyone and everyone is interested in getting their greedy little mitts on this newer means of gaming both on the go or at home, which makes me all the more certain that we're gonna see a lot of these kinds of devices popping up in the near future.

I went for the top one, think it's Q3 2022 because it was around a year away when I did it. Interesting discussion about the ergonomics, honestly I hope I can hold one and test stuff like the d-pad out before I put the rest of the money down.

They aren't available in my country :(
I'll probably order one when they are, but the Steam Controller was never available here, and the Index still isn't, so I'm not holding my breath.

I'll have mine before August of next year I'm sure since that is Q2 2022, I keep hoping I will get it early like they move me up but with how my luck is no.
I'm happy I snagged one and plus that gives me a lot of time to see unboxing's and how games run and cool things people do with them to try out so when I get mine.

This item is not available for reservation in my country, and judging from the past of valve here, it will never be, so I am getting whatever version scalpers are selling for as soon as I can afford it.
My plan is get before may 2022, but we will see how hard scalpers are going to scalp.

Preordered the most expensive one with the estimate of Q2 2022, giving me plenty of time to have it beta tested by plenty of other people before I jump into the pool.

I'm quite curious about the etched glass display they want to use there and if it will be worth the premium compared to just smooth tempered glass.

I'd go with the 256GB version to save few bucks, but the premium anti-glare etched glass is a must. Otherwise this device is useless (:>)
