You get not prompt at all, it just start the shop channel instead of the game?

Do me a favour, go to
"settings"->"data management"->"manage software".

look for the game you installed. Tell me these two things:
-What game is it exactly
-How many GB does the switch say is installed
pokemon snap 125mb

Like I said earlier, you only have the update installed, not the base game. This is the file size of the first update. The base game is about 6GB.

The file size of the latest update that came out yesterday is about 1.5GB. For the base game and the latest update combined, that's approximately 7.5GB.

to big for memory card which i was told to run fat32 not exfat
There is no reason to put a large NSP file onto the SD card. When you have an NSP file, you should install it over a USB or FTP connection from your computer to your Switch. Alternatively, you can install games using Tinfoil shops.

did with xci cutter is this wrong
I have no experience with XCI files since SX OS is depreciated and not recommended. If you are using XCI files, you have to launch the game using SX OS's built-in launcher, and you launch the game as if it's a cartridge.

If you aren't using USB storage to store your XCI files, I don't know why you aren't installing NSP files to the SD card instead.

You should never put an NSP file directly onto the SD card. It's an inefficient use of time (it takes double the time, since you have to put it onto the SD and install it) and space (since you require twice the space of the actual file: space to hold the NSP and space to install the title to).

Use something like TinWoo, Awoo-Installer, or even blawar's Tinfoil to install an NSP file that's on your computer over a USB or FTP connection. For example, use NS-USBloader on your computer where the NSP file is located, and use TinWoo on your Switch.

hi when i install big games do i have to split before i install with ns usb loader
No, you don't need to split anything, even if your SD card is FAT32. While an NSP file on your computer can be large, it's installed in pieces when it's actually installed to the Switch, so you don't need to split anything.

I can only tell you what works best for me. Nut on PC, tinfoil on switch, never had any issues.

TinWoo and NS-USBloader are generally recommended. Don't forget to install the USB drivers with NS-USBloader.

Tinfoil doesn't play well with a lot of NSP files. It's generally best for Tinfoil Shops.

I've never used a shop, only ever over USB. I've maybe been fortunate/lucky with Tinfoil/Nut combination, its worked flawlessly when compared to NS-USB Loader, Goldleaf etc etc.
